Quick backstory. 2 years ago my son bought a HR22-100 at Best Buy. We added it to my account. Now he has gotten married and had DTV installed at his house. DTV would not let him take that receiver with him and take it off my account. Since I will eventually replace the SD set with a HD,I want to keep it and not send it back. So my question is even though I know I will only have SD, will the receiver still work hooked up to a SD set?

Yup, it will work just fine. It will still record the HD version, playback to the SD set and serve HD to other receivers if you currently have Whole Home. We have a HR22-100 that is currently hooked to a SD set only.

Make sure to set the output to 480i or 480p, otherwise you will run into the HD GUI problem (not presenting in SD). Other than that, it will work just fine with an SD set.

And recording in HD, even though it will be on a SDTV, will still look that much better.

Is the B-Band converter required even though it is an SD set? I'm guessing yes, but the room it came out of had only 1 tuner hooked up, but the room it is going to now, has 2 cables run. I'll need to get another converter if they are required.

Not really. He can change the satellite settings to 3-LNB (if he has a slimline 5) or 18" (if he has a slimline 3) and use it just like I use my R22 in SD mode (even though mine actually feeds an HDTV).

Why beat the sh** out of the HDD and waste recording time recording shows in HD if they are going to be watched on an SDTV?

I used the R22 in HD mode on an SDTV for a short bit. I found the HD recordings did look significantly better than the SD recordings even though it was on a SDTV. Depending on how much TV you record, that extra space the HD recordings are taking up might not be significant.

The HD channels are much better on a SD set than the SD version of the same channel. If it is a MRV home you would also want the HD recording to serve to any would be client too. No sense in serving an inferior recording to the whole house.

I found that not to be true. It may depend on the quality of your SD tv. HD recordings looked substantially better than their SD counterparts on my old 35" Mits that I used to have.

The HD channels are much better on a SD set than the SD version of the same channel. If it is a MRV home you would also want the HD recording to serve to any would be client too. No sense in serving an inferior recording to the whole house.

HD on an SD set is also necessary for a number of the newer premium channel additions which do not have SD versions.

My sister's HR24 is this way where I had to create a hybrid custom channel list for her comprised of SD and those HD premiums which are not on 101 SD.

Couldn't just use "Hide HD channels" or "Hide SD duplicates."
