Remember the ESata replaces the internal HD and doesn't not act as additional space. The HR22 already has a 500gb hd in it so adding an external 500gb HD would result in no additional storage space. You would need at least a 640gb hd to see more recording space. If 500gbs isn't going to be enough i would go for a 1tb or even the new 1.5 tb drive.

Oh - I thought the drive added additional space I was ignorant to the fact that it took the place of the existing drive - now that seems a tad ridiculous -

How do you go about adding additional space?

thx;)

The best way is to start by getting an HR21, since at most retailers they sell (or more accurately, lease) for less than the HR22s (because the HR21s only have a 320MB disk), and then either replace the internal disk or add an external eSATA disk. I personally wouldn't consider starting any smaller than 1TB which can be had for $139 or less as a bare drive which can be used to do an internal replacement. Saving money by going smaller is a false economy. You are going to regret not having the extra recording capacity a lot more than you will regret spending an extra $40 to get 1TB instead of 750GB. In addition, I prefer internal replacement since external eSATA disks are prone to incompatibility problems with some of the HR2x DVR models.

It's absurd to think that adding an additional larger capacity external device incapacitates the existing drive.

When I read the promo scripts for these WD drives the written language in the ADs make it seem as if your adding extra capacity to your already existing drive and that it sets up so you'll have choices to save your data (as in, drive C - drive D) ...

To the person that wrote: "This takes the place of the internal drive" -

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT ...???- no offense, but it's just to foolish to believe adding additional space incapacitates the existing drive -:nono:

Yes, it's true. When the HR2X detects an Esata drive plugged in, it bypasses the internal drive and reads only off the the external you have plugged in. There is no way to "add" additional space.....it's either run off of your existing internal drive or run off of the external.

What's foolish is to believe that the HR2x uses a "drive C - drive D" setup. Western Digital makes drives and markets them to consumers .. who, in general are buying them for computers that do have that capability. The HR22 does not have that capability and you will not find any information published by DIRECTV or here that states otherwise.

As noted in the previous post, the internal HDD is bypassed when an external HDD is plugged in. The eSATA feature is actually not a published feature .. It's more of a thing you can do but I do not believe that it is a marketed feature in DIRECTV literature.

As far as I know, there are no plans to change this so you will never be able to expand the internal drive by adding an external drive.

This may be a bit off topic. But, has DIRECTV ever thought about using these eSATA drives to "move/save" recorded shows on boxes that are going to be replaced to the new unit? They could send out the eSATA drives and detailed instructions with the replacement boxes they send.

All four of the HD2X units I sent back had recorded material that I was forced to watch before sending back the unit. If there was a way to move recorded shows to the the new box, this would be a big plus for me and for others that can follow directions.

Two of the four times I had to replace a unit a technician came out. So, maybe one option would be to only offer this when a tech comes out. That would probably cost less, ensure it was done correctly, and improve customer satisfaction...

Just a thought....

External Sata drives are still tied to the particular receiver for recordings. You can hook the drive up to a new receiver and it will remember the settings but you won't be able play the recordings. Additionally the recordings would just stay on the internal hd and the external would be empty when you first hook it up. There is a way to clone the whole drive from one drive to another using a computer but it's fairly complex.

Yeah this isn't the best implementation but external hds aren't supported either. This was the quickest and easiest way to allow those who wanted to increase their recording capacity to do so. Eventually we might get an updated and supported implementation that has many more features but not right now.

In case if someone too much dedicate to DTV and missed it - Dish implemented external storage though USB interface as unlimited quantity (number and size of HDDs) and manage transfer and using it for whole household, helping to preserve your recordings in case of failure/replacement a DVR.

Last I knew their setup was copy only.. I hope Directv never does this since you can't use it for recording.. To put it another way, if you go on vacation for a while and the original (internal) drive fills up it has to start deleting stuff..
I really like that you can easily add actual RECORDING space...

Not a problem - before your vacation, transfer all your recordings to EHD, you could always PLAY from it late, and not just use the DVR, but any DVR on your account and soon on standalone HD IRD ViP211 !
But we swinging too far from the topic.
