We've got 3 identical setups, with HR24-100 and TCL LCD HDTV I purchased from Amazon. I'm not thrilled with the sound quality from the TCL units (no surprise) so I'm looking at adding a sound bar or entry level HT system. My primary concern is that the volume can be controlled by the HR24 remote control without having to move the 4 position slide switch at the top. I'd like to spend $200 or less. Suggestions?

Take a look over here and read some of the posts about Sound Bars.
Many have used several different ones and gotten them to work while others seem to not work at all with the DTV remote.
This should be the results of a search in the remote control section of the Forum.

You may need to increase your spending price for a soundbar. Many start at $299.99. Take a look at the Polk Audio SurroundBar 3000.

I have spent the last half hour or more looking at sound bars. They do not give you much information about frequency response, etc.
Be sure to go to several stores, like Best Buy, Walmart, Fry's, etc. and listen to them before buying and have the understanding that you can return it if it does not meet your expectations. A good possibility that they will sound better when you get it home than in the store due to the size of the space they are in.

I have a friend that has a Polk but he got the more expensive one, around $500 when he bought it. He loves it. It has a wireless Subwoofer with it.

I'm not looking for great system that will impress my audiophile friends, just a step up from the LCD's built in speakers. Decent sound, but compatible with the HR24 remote is the main criteria. Remote must be able to control the volume, without fumbling with the slider switch.

For less than $700.00 you can get yourself a decent Home Theater system. Entry level A/V receivers start at around $249.99. You can take your pick from several manufacturers (Denon, Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha, ect.). I don't see a problem with your DirecTV remote controlling the volume with your choice of A/V receiver. The Polk Audio Blackstone TL1600 Home Theater Speaker System ($399.99) will give you a 5.1 system with lot of bang for the bucks.
