I have an HR24 with a 2T external drive with about 15% free. When surfing the guide, every couple of pages it freezes for 10 to 30 seconds. Seems to happen most when the highlighted line falls on one of those in guide advertisements. Does this sound like a receiver problem or a hard drive problem? Thanks, just trying to get some input before I call and say that my receiver is dying.

I've read from time to time here that when you get to 15% free or less, the slowness or freezing you mention starts to surface.
Can you remove your external drive, reboot the DVR and does this problem continue? Assuming your internal drive is in good shape and can take over without the external drive. BTW Don't reboot twice within 30 mins or you will wipe the guide.

You might also make sure your Internet connection is working, especially if the guide is freezing when an ad is in view. One way to do this is to run the system test from Settings. It said I wasn't connected to the Internet, so I reset the Linksys WET610N wireless adapter that I have connected to my DVR, which got me back online. This solved the slowness problems on my HR21 with a 2TB drive, although I have about 30% free.

There's a portion of the HR drive reserved for system use. I could be wrong, but I'd assume the GUIDE data is stored there, and not in the user partition. If so, I'm not sure why the % free on the playlist would have any bearing on guide caching performance. :shrug:
OTOH, if you were trying to access the GUIDE at the same time new GUIDE data was being indexed, that might slow things down. Just a thought.

Since the Guide data is over two weeks old on the internal, wouldn't it make sense to flush the guide entirely? Otherwise, it may take longer to rebuild the whole thing, as presumably it has to check item by item, or probably block by block.NR4P said:

Regardless of where the Guide is stored, if there's truth to the notion that the drive slows down-actually, access to the drive's content; the drive spins at the same rate!- then increasing free space makes sense.Steve said:
There's one person who stated categorically that HR drives are controlled in a manner different enough from computer HDDs that the % free doesn't obtain, but he's not responded to my request for additional info. So for now, I am going on: The fuller the HD, the slower the access. Not noticeable until you get to the extremes.

It would make sense because the heads would be traveling over more surface area of the drive. The more full it is the slower it is going to get for random access mostly. Sequential access should remain roughly the same as long as there are not very large files being accessed.Laxguy said:

FWIW, my HR24-500 is 4% full. I just set the GUIDE to ALL channels. If I "press and hold" the CHAN DOWN key, I get through a whole revolution of the GUIDE in 40-45 seconds. I tried it a couple of times, starting at channel 1. I had to "re-press and hold" CHAN DOWN in the 700's on one run, and the 800's on a second run. The 40-45 seconds includes the re-click. This was using the stock internal drive.
I thought it was interesting my first run was quicker than the second run.

All Channels is going to be your slowest guide by far with all the stupid banner ads for the movie channels and PPV channels. Make a favorites list and minimize the amount of banner ads for best performance with scrolling.Steve said:

With my HR24-500, I scrolled from the OTA channels up to the 600's. Went quick.
Some brief pauses when I hit channels above 125 due to the ads. And again at 500 with the ads there. But they were pretty brief.
But my free space is about 80%. Last time rebooted was 2-3 days ago.
