Ok, I have done all kinds of trial and errors and have used Tversity, Playon ect with no avail.

I have a dedicated pc setup running windows xp. I am trying to stream backed up videos from my pc which are usually in mpeg format.

Tversity never really worked, Playon worked, but it constantly has to pause to transcode the video, making it unwatchable.

I am looking for some sort of cheap way to allow me to do this, and have come across a Linksys router: Linksys EA4500. Which has a built in media server.

If I attach a USB harddrive to this, will my HR24 see it on my network under Media Share and allow me to play videos flawlessly?

Any ideas?

I have a Netgear WNDR 3700 with a built in Media Server and it works just fine on all of my receivers using Whole House. I too tried various softwares on my Mac and while they somewhat worked I wasn't satisfied with any of them. The Media Server built into the router works just fine and doesn't depend on your computer other than getting the media on the hard drive in the first place. BTW, I am using a USB thumb/flash drive connected to my router to store my media..

That was what I was curious about, if the Router has a built in media server, and if my HR24 will recognize it allowing the media share capabilities.

If PlayOn was pausing to transcode the video then your PC probably doesn't have a CPU that can transcode fast enough, your CPU is just not fast enough. I am curious, which codec pack you you were using with Tversity.

Video files have to be in the MPEG-2 format for the DirecTV boxes to read them. Regardless of the Media Server, the file will still have to be transcoded to a format that Media Share can read.

The easy answer is to upgrade the CPU to something faster or invest in software that can pre-transcode. The only one I know of that can do this is Mezzmo ($30).

I've always found it ironic that the HD boxes use MPEG-4 standards for normal television broadcasting but won't read MPEG-4 streams. Just seems strange.

Ya I was surprised, it was a Dual Core p4 processor, running nothing but windows xp, as it was setup just as a dedicated server.

The codec pack I had with tversity was the additional pack that tversity offered... not sure what it was off the top of my head.

As long as we are sure that a dedicated router, that has NAS support, and a built in media server from the router, then I will just go out a purchase that as a working solution.

I'm just concerned I'll fork out 180 bucks for a new router, and my HR24 won't see it...

Are the HR24's compatible with DLNA then?

Ok, went out and purchased a router that had a built in media server.

Directv did not even see it on the network. (Just took it back to the store)
Looks like back to the drawing board for my PC to do it with Playon.
Or possibly back to Tversity, if someone knows of a working codec pack that will actually allow the videos to transcode to the HR24.

I have a P4 3.06 Ghz, running bare Windows XP, with 1gb of ram.

How could this not suffice to be fast enough to transcode dvd backups to my HR24 connected with a wired network?

Your XP PC has enough processing power.

- Have you tried Tversity v.1.8b? The newer versions do not stream videos on Media Share. I am using Tversity v. 1.8b with the recommended codec pack. This works for the PS3 and D* Media Share. It provides full control on the PS3, but D* Media Share has the following issues: no DD 5.1; no ff or rew; and pauses only a minute or two.

- How are you connecting your XP PC to the D* DVR? I have two HR24s connected to a network and internet with a D* CCK-W (wireless bridge) which connects to a Linksys N wireless router. It is over 20 feet away on the 2nd floor. This streams seamlessly with Tversity.

I've had great luck with Serviio, a free media server app with a DirecTV transcoding profile already built in. There are releases for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I have a dedicated Ubuntu Linux server with a tri-core (Bought as a dual core but really a quad with one dead core) AMD Phenom II processor and 8 gigs of RAM. It's java based, and there is a console app that you can run to do everything via GUI. I have the console app on my mac mini set up to point to the linux install of Serviio via an AFP share on the Ubuntu Server. This setup has run great for me, and has only had issues playing a 1080P Movie that was 20 something gigs.

The software detects devices on your network and automatically uses built in profiles for them (DirecTV, PS3, etc.). It works great with my HR24-200 and both of my H24-200s. Never actually tried it with the PS3, but it did detect it and assign a PS3 specific profile.

Ya I figured it was more than enough.
I did try the new version before I found out it had issues. I downloaded an older version (1.8) like you said and actually installed the codec pack it recommended.

I know the downside about the pause, ff, rw ect, just want to be able to stream the kids movies from my pc to the dvr.

My setup basically is this:
HR24 SWM, Whole Home connected to BB Deca. I am connected with wired networking through a powerline setup (which will not cause any issues as I have 100mps speed)

It's a pretty simple setup, and I know the receivers are not designed to do this, but I was so close with actually streaming them with Playon, but then the "Buffering" issue which made it unviewable. And Tversity never allowed me to play anything, my HR24 allowed me to see them, and as soon as I hit play, the HR24 complains that it cannot play the content, but the Tversity server says it is streaming and remains at 0% while looking at it on the computer side.
