When I play back 3D recordings, they aren't 3D. I've even recorded while watching just to make sure that I'm recording 3D material. Does it not work? Is there some setting? Is it a known issue? Am I an idiot ... wait don't answer that last one.

So you say you can watch a live 3D program and that works but when you try to play back a 3D recording it doesn't? When it doesn't work what happens?
For example, I watched a show about the Sun on 3net in 3D, and recorded simultaneously. When I play back the recording, it seems to be regular 2D content, although it seems washed out a bit.

Is the signal path between the HR34 and the TV going through your AVR, if yes try bypassing that and see what happens.

That's a good point and I can try, but the AVR is set to "through" mode already. And since it passes it live, I didn't see why it would interfere with recorded. Can try it though.
