HR34 and Slingbox Solo Questions

4546 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  harsh
I recently upgraded to an HR 34 and am using S video (yup, so 20th century) and I have a few issues.

First, Slingbox "set up" does not list the HR 34 for remote setup, and none of the codes work, so I can't use the remote at all.

Second, I keep getting a pop up screen on the Slingbox which says, "Your TV or its cables are not HD. On the remote control, press and hold the EXIT key, until you see a confirmation your receiver is set for standard definition".

This never used to happen before. Do I need to do this before leaving the house for Slingbox use on the road?

Thanks in advance for help solving these issues.

Are you using S to the TV or the Slingbox (or both)?

You should be using component for the Slingbox Solo. It has a loop-through if you're using component for the TV as well.

The message warning about SD is more likely coming from the HR34 as opposed to the Slingbox. The new "HD GUI" doesn't display on the SD outputs unless you've chosen an SD resolution. Instead you get a message similar to what you describe.

Again, component is probably your best option (unless you get stuck with a protected program)

To get you going, try telling the Slingbox you have an HR22.

How are you accessing your Slingbox?
I have a Slingbox Pro HD connected to an HR22. I also have an HR20 and a new HR34. For now I have left the Slingbox connected to the HR22 and HR20 but may eventually switch it to the HR34. It doesn't really matter with Whole Home since I see all recorded programs on all DVRs on the Slingbox. Your issue with the message about HD is related to the new HD guide which is the only option on the HRs. It doesn't play nice with Slingbox, so you get the error unless you switch your HR to a non-HD resolution. You can do it on the road with the Slingbox remote but it is a pain due to the lag with the remote commands, particularly if you are on a lousy hotel slow internet connection.

I am not sure about the remote issue. The HR34 uses the same remote as other HR's 20 and above, so I would think you could select one of those remotes and it should work. You can only use IR for the remote option in the HR setup because the Slingbox will not transmit RF remote signals. If you are trying to run multiple HRs in the room with the Slingbox, there is more setup that will be necessary so each of your "real" remotes only controls one HR, and the Slingbox is controlling the one you want it to control.

Selecting HR20 in the slingbox setup will work as long as your HR34 is using the default remote setup.

The units no longer output both an SD and HD GUI. You'll need to either get yourself a component to S-Video converter or switch to SD, by using the exit key, before leaving the house.
Hi Harsh.
Thanks so much for the response.

I have the S video going from the Slingbox directly to the HR 34, as with my current setup, S video is the only available input on the receiver.

Sadly, the HR 22 tip did not work.

And, I hate to admit this, but I have no idea what a component loop through means.
I have this very setup. You must use component, not s-video. If you are already using component and cannot switch that to hdmi, then you can run component into the Slingbox and then out to whatever else needs it. If I recall, the top row is the input, and the bottom row is the output.

As for the remote setup, choosing hr20, 21, 22, 23, or 24 should work fine.
If you set your HR34 up for RF remote, then it won't work with the slingbox. If you have it set for IR, then it should work as others have noted. Simply select one of the other HR2x products for the IR code.

It is imperative that you not confuse inputs with outputs. All of the RCA and HDMI connections on the back of the HR34 are OUTPUTS.

The Slingbox has an output (lower row of jacks) associated with each of its inputs (upper row of jacks) that relays (loops through) the video signal so you send the output of the HR34 to the input of the Slingbox and using the Slingbox outputs, you go to the other device. You need only an additional component cable set to do this.
Sadly, the HR 22 tip did not work.
See carl6's theory on this one. The HR2x is the correct choice but you MUST NOT be configured for RF (DIRECTV, mind boggling as it is, doesn't allow you to run both infrared and radio frequency at the same time).
