I just noticed that the HR34 doesn't have optical audio out, only digital coax

any guesses as to if D* might fix this later?

What's to "fix?" Digital is digital. If your system can't accept a coax input, get a cheap converter from Monoprice or Amazon.
How would you add a missing piece of hardware on a model? I doubt there will be a fix to this, not on the HR34 at least.
As I use digital optical to connect audio to mt HD PVR it will be annoying to have to use an adapter
When possible I have always used Optical. Just one less chance of distortion in the audio from stray fields. Coax is resistant to fields but certainly not proof to those fields. With all the wires in an HT cabinet there are a lot of fields. And it is not always convenient to cross wires at right angles, and many times just not possible. Especially at the receiver where all the wires are about parallel because all the connections are at right angles to the back panel.

With HDMI now it is all on one cable anyway. One can only hope the cable manufacturer did proper shielding.
People worrying about "fields" is just silly. I've had my HR34 connected through digital coax for a lot longer than anyone in this thread, and have used it since my first DVD player in the 90's without ever observing any signal "distortion". Actually, being a digital signal the only distortion would be digital artifacting or dropouts. Haven't had any, ever. Yeah a cable might go bad but optical cables and connectors are subject to going bad too.
Could someone please link to the specific kind of converter I would need to convert the digital audio coax out of the HR34 to optical on my receiver? I am having trouble figuring out what I need.
Would be interesting to hook an SAE click and pop remover to the line and see if there are indeed any digital artifacts. You could listen to the removed clicks and pops.
I guess this might

btw due to the viglink thing the site uses you'll need to hit quote and copy the link, clicking it likely won't work

though that's one more device I'd have to power and mean another power strip or reworking how things are lay-ed out

I have one of these and it works fine.
