Past experience has taught me to understand the proper install prior to a tech coming out. To that end, can someone help me to understand the correct setup for a new HR34 Genie installation. I'm moving so they will be installing a new dish and entire setup.

My current setup involves a slimline 3LNB SWiM dish with a single coax line down from the dish to a green labeled splitter. I have 2 HR24s and 1 older HR23. I plan to keep the 2 HR24s, add the HR34 and replace the HR23 with a C31.

What type of dish should I expect them to bring and how many coax cables will be coming down from the dish? Will it be a SWiM dish with a single coax line down?

Will they use the green labeled splitter(s) or multi-switch(s)?

How many tuners will I max out at?

Will all of the receivers (HR24, HR34 and C31) communicate and connect to the internet over coax? Will any ethernet cables be necessary?

Are they going to want to use some sort of connection kit or cinema kit?

If anyone has a diagram of a properly functioning HR34 setup that could be shared I would appreciate it.

The HR34 has 5 tuners. Each HR2x has 2 tuners. With an HR34, 2 HR24's and a C31 you will have 9 tuners total. This means you will get a regular (non-SWM) dish with 4 coax lines coming down to an SWM16 multiswitch. From there, you will have single coax runs to each of your units. All will communicate and connect over coax. There needs to be one connection to your network (LAN), which will probably be done using a Cinema Connection Kit (CCK), but could be done by connecting ethernet directly to the HR34. Either way will work.

Is there any reason I would prefer to have a SWM dish vs. the regular (non-SWM) dish?

Theoretically I could drop an HR24, add another C31, and be at 7 tuners (the C31s are a client, and do not count as a tuner, correct?) which is under the 8 tuner limit for a SWM dish. If I did that, would they bring the different (SWM) dish and only run the one coax from the dish down?

I would prefer to have a single lead down from the dish. My plan was to run the single line from the dish into my basement. There, I would install the power inverter alongside my cable modem, router and theoretically, a green labeled splitter. From the splitter, single lines to each room with receiver. I have already run the coax lines from that point in my basement in-wall to each room that will have a receiver during a remodel. I didn't want the installer running all that coax around the perimeter of the house and blowing several holes in my brick.

Given my wiring plan, and the in-wall wiring is already done, should I try and stay under the 8 tuner limit so I get a SWM dish?

If I don't, and they bring the regular dish, I guess they could run all 4 coax leads through one hole (albeit larger) to that some point in my basement and install the SWM16 multiswitch where I planned to have a green label splitter?

Any thoughts or information would be appreciated.

Under your new scenario, they wouldn't touch your dish. As long as the total tuner comes in below 8, you should be fine. I passed on a free upgrade to an HR34 from an H24 since it would have required the SWM16 and 4 lines from the dish into my home. I ended up just adding a 3rd HR24 instead.

Incidentally, if you go with the first setup and the SWM16, you may want to reconsider swapping out the HR23 for a Client. There won't be much added capability and you'll lose 2 tuners and some recording capacity. If you wanted to keep the recording capacity you could also set the DVRs to single tuner mode. Just realize that if you try to reenable dual mode and exceed the 8 tuner limit, you will get errors in the future. The install won't be any more expensive either way.
