HR34 new install - pixellation problems

2380 Views 21 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  charlestonemt
Had a D* tech install a HR34 two days ago. I'm having pretty bad video/sound lag and pixellation problems with that unit. I also have HR21/700 and HR23/700 that have been here for a while. No problems with those receivers.

He installed a SWiM 16. There is a line running from the 1-8 outlet through a 2-way splitter to the HR 21 and HR 23. The cable to the HR34 is from 9-16 and the 29vdc power supply is also connected to that cable in-line behind my HR34. Could that be causing the problem? I've heard that the 29vdc needs to be on an independent coax connected to the power outlet independently. He originally tried that, but had problems getting the only other free cable in my house to tone out.

Thanks in advance. Also, I'm a total newbie and not familiar with much of the lingo here, so go easy on me.

 first off these are backwards.

The PI can't power the -16 through the second [9-16] output.
The SWM#1 can, as is marked, and the PWR connector can.
Yep, the PI being too close to the receiver is a typical cause of this problem.

See here for a technical explanation as to why; http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=3079631#post3079631

If the tech. couldn't get the other spare line to tone out, then he should have tried a 2 x 1 splitter hookup to the line feeding the HR34 shown here in the image on the right as an alternative.

You seem to have mixed up a DECA issue with a SWiM problem, "unless" I don't understand the TS's post.

Thought having the PI too close to the receiver due to its internal blocking capacitor could cause issues with either or both as mentioned in your words in the above linked post.

Sorry, but that isn't "noise", and you can't "release it" if it was.

What the picture shows, is why you don't want to have the PI with its blocking cap too close to the DECA or for that matter the SWiM. ...

You need to think or related this to the transmitter(s), as that's what has the problem.
Too close to the SWiM's output, or too close to the DECA's output.

Right...I mixed up the two.

So now that we've got that straight, can you give some more about the issue?

Any coax connected that aren't being used or open ports of a splitter?
Thanks for the help so far. The other line is, in fact, dead. I just tried moving the power supply back to the open line and nothing.

The only other equipment added is a wireless CCK (to the HR34 setup) and in-line DECA (?) to each of the pre-existing boxes.

I originally thought the pixellation may be due to my wireless HDMI transmitter between my A/V receiver and TV, but 3d blu-ray playback is flawless over the same wireless connection.

Call me chicken, but trying to troubleshoot this over the internet scares the hell out of me with a wireless HDMI link.

Is there any way you can go wired for the purpose of troubleshooting?
Not very easily, and definitely not at the moment. I understand though...that's why I threw that into the mix. The easiest way to do that would be if I had a longer length of coax, which I don't :(

It's a wall-mounted flat screen and all of the components are in a closet in the same room about 10 feet away.
Would the HR34 use more bandwidth than a 3d blu-ray does? If so, I suppose the wireless HDMI setup may be causing at least part of the problem...
Question - If the PI IRD port wasn't terminated when hooked into the independent coax, could that have been the problem (why nothing was getting power)? Sorry for so many questions...just not sure how all of this works.
So maybe:

Swap the 34 with another DVR.
Does the 34 have problems in the new location?
Does the swapped DVR have problems in this location?

The IRD port not terminated, can cause SWiM signal problems, but not a powering the SWiM problem.
Might be a good time for photos of the SWiM, and splitter(s) and anything else you can take.

Good idea! I'll try that.
There will be a number of variables doing this.

To try to rule out the wireless HDMI:
Does the swapped receiver have any issues?
Are these with live TV?
Does a recording done from its other location play fine?
If live has problems, but the earlier recording doesn't, then wireless HDMI "should be able to be" ruled out.
If live TV doesn't have problem, and the 34 at the other location also doesn't, then it still may be the SWiM feed to the wireless location, as the 34 has 5 tuners, but the swapped is only using 2.
I think I am just going to take it off the wall and connect it using a regular HDMI cable. I think that would be easier than shuffling boxes around at this point. I'll let you know what I find when I get it done.
Wow...looks like the wireless HDMI may have been the problem. Cant believe its looking like I may have to buy and fish a 20-30 ft cable now...
