Sounds like you're using wireless and that's probably your issue. That can be plagued by a lot of RFI, EMI, noise, connection drops, etc. The single best and cheapest way to improve your speed and reliability without upgrading and/or buying new gear is to go wired instead of wireless!

FYI, I have owned a few Belkins and will never again. I've have had nothing but dropped connections, etc with them.
