New to the boards here, but have been a lurker for quite some time.

I have the HR34 HMC and received the new HDGUI update like most other folks. Minus the slowness, it has been working just fine.

However, all of the sudden yesterday, I lost all audio on the SD Channels. HD Channel audio comes in just fine. I checked about 100 different channels and there were no exceptions.

Audio is running via HDMI to my receiver. My receiver normally "lights up" when the audio comes through, and it appears as if nothing is coming to it when on a SD channel. I checked the settings on both my HR34 and receiver and nothing looks out of the ordinary. I checked my other boxes (H25's), and they pump out audio on SD channels just fine over HDMI. Reboots to the HMC and receiver resulted in no change either.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to dbstalk.

SD channels aren't in DD 5.1, but HD are. That's likely the reason why SD vs HD is different. Is the HR34 set for DD or PCM audio?

If you bypass the audio receiver, does the problem persist? If not, post your receiver manufacturer and model number.

Audio is not predictable on ours. Sometimes it is good other times not. For example, Dish Hopper commercials have no audio. mmmmmmmm Wonder if that is on purpose?

Well, I figured it out.

I started messing with all sorts of settings. What it ended up being was that I had the display output set to 1080i and 1080p only. The second I checked the 720p box, voila, the sound came back. What on earth this setting had to do with the sound is beyond me.

And for what it's worth, it's gradual. As a test case, I unchecked 720p and the sound remained. However after a reboot, the sound was gone again. Checking the 720p box brings the sound right back. So it's some sort of bug with the display settings.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

That is pretty wild. There is nothing technically different with audio for different resolutions; they are about as far removed from each other as you can imagine, especially since the audio is PCM for the SD channels rather than AC-3.

I think you must be right; a bug. Checking a resolution probably invokes a new program loop in the code, but again, why that might be involving audio is a real mystery. Maybe PCM runs as a service and spontaneously quits, and checking a rez box restarts a number of services routinely, including that. Guesswork is all we have at the moment.
