I want the 5 tuner advantage of the new hr34, my internet is a slow broadband. Also no wiring anywhere in the house excet the computer room. call direct tv nice rep offered $199 plus $49 to install. Acceptable price, but not available unless I also but an internet kit for $99. This is something I don't think will work for me. can you not just buy the hr34 as reviever? don't really want anymore cables in the house.

Welcome to dbstalk.
First you never really buy it, you lease it. If its your only receiver, there's no receiver charge but there will be a DVR fee.

Suggest you just call local Directv dealers in your area and see what they will do for you.

Order whole home dvr, instead of the CCK, it will be $199 but they won't have to run a new line. Without SWM already installed you cannot order a HR34 through DIRECTV and you cannot use a HR34 if you order it elsewhere.

If your HR34 is going to be installed in the same room as your networking equipment then you would be able to use a direct ethernet cable connection from your HR34 to your router and would not need the external CCK module.

If your HR34 is not going in the same room as your networking equipment and you are planning on using a wireless connection to your router, then there is no way around the external CCK module as it's required in the wireless configuration in order to connect to all of the online features such as DirecTV Cinema, PPV, On Demand, DirecTV2PC, Media Share, etc.

As far as how much they're charging you, I got my HR34 for $99 with free installation and no external DECA/CCK units were needed as I use a direct ethernet connection to my router.

The price you get is simply determined by how well you negotiate and by how helpful the D* rep is that you speak with. Don't spend any time with the initial CSR you speak with. Instead ask them to transfer you to the customer retention/cancellation department and they will be able to do a lot more for you in in the way of approving special discounts. Discounts will also depend on your account status; like how long you've been a customer, your payment history, your current programming package, if you're currently already under a contract, and when the last time you used an upgrade for some new equipment was.

Sometimes it may take 3 or 4 attempts of you hanging up and calling back until you get the right kind of retention rep on the phone that will work with you the way you need them to. Just don't give up and remember that at the end of the day, D* NEVER wants to lose a customer.

I had my HR34-700 installed this past Friday. It cost me $99 with free install, SWiM & DECA installed too. A $10/12mo credit too. 2yr re-up. The problem is the installer messed up the DECA install. It passed first test but we never tried to play from the HR20-100 in the bedroom. It barfs. HR 34 support said he installed it wrong, as if it was a -700. Missing splitter and filter. He couldn't req the parts so I wait for an appt. still nothing and it's Sunday. The 34 is painfully slow on channel changing and guide listing. Fast as all get out on 30sec skipping. Like my old ReplayTV.

RBR is my Special Friend. I can try again, but as for MRV the 34 specialist almost threw a fit on what I described as installed. He said he was amazed the 20 was working at all. Which it is. My HR20 and H21 can see the 34 but not the other way. The 20 can record but the tech did screw cable two into the OTA connector!! Oops!! I fixed that. Sigh. I hadn't realized the 34 was still on Blue I needed to read more, but 5 TUNERS was very loud and clear to me, above all else. So I live with a beta product and hope for the best, but I won't get the make a choice MSG any more!

There are two ways to hook up the HR20-100. See this link.

Where his HR34 is being installed is not relevant to why he needs to order a CCK or WHDVR. They have to order it because they need to have SWM. Why do you keep posting this all over thinking that it's some conspiracy that DIRECTV doesn't tell people they can use this as a bridge. They have from the day it was available to non beta customers. The bottom line is they will not be able to place an order without either a CCK or WHDVR on the order for people who don't have SWM flagged accounts.
