DirecTV will let you get a 34 now without doing RVU. The box itself is classified as an HMC but there is no RVU requirement (though some CSRs thought there was).

There are definitely bugs. It doesn't necessarily affect everyone, or else they'd be caught sooner.

Of course the HD DVRs had a cosmetic bug for at least 5-6 years, but hopefully that's the exception.
