Hey guys, new here. Any help or insight on this issue will be greatly appreciated!

I've had a problem where a few recordings on my HR34 (DirecTV's whole home HDDVR/5 records at a time) have just gone completely blank. Doesn't happen too often, but when it does, RAGE!

Today was the saddest one where the HR34 completely screwed up my recording of NFL redzone HD...NOOOOO anything but Redzone, WHY HR34, WHY!?!!....*ahem*

Sorry about that. So here's what happened: I watched about 2 1/2 hours of Redzone as it was being recorded, then I had to go to work. This is what I do pretty much every Sunday, by the way. Then when I got home about 6 hours later, I go to start watching the program (Redzone) where I left on and...darkness. Nothing but a blank screen, along with the guide bar on the bottom (pops up when fast forwarding, pausing, etc). I can rewind it, fast forward it, doesn't matter, the entire recording is just blank. Even the part I had watched earlier. Also worth nothing that Closed Captioning will still work as if nothing was wrong.

Since I had this issue before, I knew I was boned. I knew Redzone was gone forever. Tried to reset the receiver just to make me feel better but I knew that wasn't going to fix it.

Redzone is a loooong recording, 8-9 hours. I recall when this happened in the past, it was also on very long recordings, 4+ hours.

So am I right to assume there's nothing I can do on this one? Are there others out there who have had this issue? I bet there are. Going to call DirecTV tomorrow and see what they can do, not sure if a new receiver will help but willing to give it a shot.

Thanks for reading!

Yes, sad to say you are not the only one. Same thing happened to me on MLB Network. Was watching a recording and had 213 set live and it was about at the end of a show that I started watching. Decided to press R to record it so I could watch it later, since luckily there was a full buffer amazingly there. Said it captured it, but when you go to watch it all you get is a frozen screen of the last thing you were watching LIVE. This has been mentioned several times in the 0x5cd issues thread. I've been bitten by this several times now. Luckily my 5year old HR20-100 still works!

Welcome to the forum, Mr. Dope! :welcome_s

Glad you posted, as I have been having problems with Red Zone also, but as I am brand new to it, and have been away a couple of Sundays, wasn't sure if I was screwing up.

I don't think another (new) HR34 will solve it, but software fixes are being tested all the time, and I bet this one will be fixed, too.

Thanks for the replies!

It's not a problem with Redzone, but I think lengthy programs in general. The last time this happened with a golf tournament which was around 6 hours I think.

So a new box likely wouldn't solve anything hrm? Is that new Genie box they're advertising any different than the HR34?

Anyways, i'll report the problem to DirecTV customer service. Thanks

The "new Genie box" is the HR34. Marketing so decreed.

And I have read of other failures on extra long shows on the Genie. And it's the coded time, not actual recording time, I think, as I hit record way late in the Red Zone broadcast.
