Hr34 swap for hr21

I have an older hr 21 DVD that I would like to replace with the new hr34. Is this as simple as just swapping those receivers for one another. It looks like the hr 34 just has one input for the satellite cable and the hr 21 has 2 coaxial connections

If you have a SWiM setup, it's a simple swap.

If you don't have a SWiM setup, you have to get one first, as the HR34 requires it.

The HR34 requires SWiM, which only uses one coax per receiver (no matter how many tuners it has). Since you appear to have 2 coax runs to your HR21, you don't have SWiM. So at a minimum the LNB on your dish will have to be replaced. Depending on what other receivers you may have, other changes may be necessary.
Thanks for the reply. I do have the newer slimline dish. How hard is it to hook up a SWim setup and if my dish is correct what else would I need? I guess I could alwayss have Dtv come out and do the setup. Do you think they would offer discounts to existing customers? Sometimes I think it is better to buy the box outright else where and own it vs keep paying lease fee.
To buy an HR34 outright from someone else is in the neighborhood of $600. Ordering a unit from another retailer for the $399 price is still a leased unit..

You don't have to change the dish, you have to change the LNB. You don't have a SWiM-LNB, you have the kind with as many as 4 coaxes connected. Now, if you have 4 coaxes from your dish to a 'central' ground point, you could attach those 4 to a SWiM-8 multiswitch, and get SWiM that way. Otherwise, you need a SWiM LNB, which has an 8 tuner SWiM multiswitch built-in. If you don't have any other receivers, you could attach the single coax output from the SWiM LNB or SWiM-8 directly to the HR34. If you have other SWiM-compatible receivers, you use a 'green label' splitter to get one coax to each receiver.

Even if you 'buy' an HR34 at Solid Signal, you don't own it. It's no different than obtaining it from DirecTV. Since the HR34 is a hot commodity, I'm not sure you're going to see a lot of deals. If you order the HR34 from DirecTV, they will have to update you to SWiM, and you don't have to figure out how to DIY.
Owning a receiver doesn't get around the monthly fee, it's the same as the lease fee. The only time you don't pay the fee is if the receiver is the primary one. But it doesn't matter if it's owned or leased.
