I've been out of the DirecTV upgrade loop for awhile, and to say things have changed since I last purchased my 3 HR24s several years ago would be an understatement. I also apologize in advance for asking a question that may have been asked and answered multiple times, but I've not been able to find a thread that addresses my particular questions.

My understanding is that if I were to upgrade to the HS17, I would have to get rid of all my HR24s and replace them with clients. Is this based on technical issues, or it it purely a marketing/business decision by AT&T? If the restriction is due to technical issues, do you anticipate a genie 3 that would address this issue? If it's simply a business decision, do you ever see AT&T changing their mind?

It was a business decision by Directv. I think they wanted to simplify installations to reduce support costs.

If they change their mind on anything, my bet is on them allowing more than one Genie 2 on an account for people who have larger installs rather than allowing them to work with obsolete hardware (but there's no indication of this so it is just my guess for which there is zero evidence)

All or almost all the HR2x are over five years old, probably won't be too long before you can't even get them from Directv anymore so there is no reason for them to support having them in an install with a Genie 2.

The reason as stated Hardware (2)Tuner DVR's are being fazed out as well as single tuner receivers - AT &T will no longer MFG those so starting with the HS -17 (which) has no Port to Direct Connect out put to a TV -Making it a Video Server - While only "mini's" receivers with no tuners (cost Cutting MFG) are only allowed on that type of account.

You don't have to get rid of the old hr24's unless they want them returned -you can keep them -AT&T just won't activate them on your Account after it's been changed (UPGRADED) to a HS-17

No mixing of OLD & New AT &T policy.

I disagree with that. It's another money stream and they're not gonna let that go quickly. "Probably" is the key word, just like satellite "probably" going away overnight. None of us knows what will happen. Just more speculation.

I was afraid of that. My reason for wanting a standalone receiver is that I use it a few times a year at our football tailgate. That would be way too much trouble to do with the HS17 and a client. Oh well, as bad as I hate to think about it, maybe it's time to see what Dish has to offer.

They haven't made HR2x in years, and they are fully depreciated after five years and become "non-recoverable" at that point. AFAIK there aren't any that are less than five years old now, so they probably aren't asking for any of them back - well maybe there are a few they ask to have returned because their process for asking for returns has been broken forever, but if if they get them back they are probably going to recycle them instead of refurbish them. When they run out of what they currently have, where will they get more?

It doesn't mean they will stop letting people who already have them use them, but they will become harder to acquire once Directv no longer offers them (like what happened with the AM21)

They certainly are taking the 24s back. I just sent one back and I'm waiting for the kit to send another one back. There's no reason that I can see for thinking the 24s are suddenly gonna disappear.

You can still get a Genie and 24s, there's no reason to leave. Might not be brand new but the refurbs are far better now than they ever were. You don't have to get the HS17. D* will be perfectly happy to upgrade you to a 44 or 54. I have a 44, simply the best DVR I've ever had...altho the software sucks.

It could be certain manufacturers that they don't want back. The 2 that I deactivated were both HR24-100 models. One of those was still working just fine. I deactivated it to save the $7 fee. The other one did have the hard drive going bad. Which manufacturer are you sending back ?

A 24-200 (Samsung) and a 24-500 (don't remember). Both unusable. I went thru ATT for each one of these.

It seems like it would make a lot of sense for them to go with Genie 2 and clients for commercial customers, and that's what I assume they will move to, but today all they've got are H25s. Once a real 4K sports channel launches they'll have to do something better than the current solution of HR54 + C61K for each 4K TV, maybe we will see what the plan is then.

Does the COM3000 even support 4K? I know the press releases say it does, but do they have line cards for it that support 4K out yet? When I looked just now all I can see are HD cards. Nevermind that the cost is much higher than using receivers, and would make it more expensive to support.

So if I have three HR24s and one HR23 what 4K receiver or DVR can I add to the account and still keep my current DVRs.?

If my only choice is to give them up then I am not even going to consider trying out 4K!

Thanks for any help.

To add 4K service and keep your current DVRs you will need a HR54 and a C61K-700.
