I am looking for a new receiver and I am leaning toward the Hughes Director Pack Receiver. How good is this receiver?

I had an RCA 450RG receiver (my second) The first one broke within two days and the second receiver finally broke this past weekend. That is the slowest receiver on the market. It takes about 5 seconds for the program guide to come up on the screen, another 5 seconds when you input the channel number and then it doesn't pick up on the first digit you entered so you have to enter the channel number a second time. The second receiver finally broke this past weekend.

Thanks for your help.

The Hughes Director receiver works well, but I would opt for the Exectutive Director model. It has a function that allows you to easily program shows you need to record to VCR via a wired remote sensor that connects to the front of your VCR. Basically it sends a signal just as if you were to hit record on your remote. I find this extremely helpful rather than setting time on your VCR.Good luck!

Actually, mental has had problems with his Director's Series, as have many others. The clock doesn't work right, so you have to reset the receiver (unplug it) every few days. I read on DBSForums that a software patch is supposed to be out by October 15th.

I have two executive director GCEBO receivers. Every several days the favorites list will add or subtract channels all on its own. (mostly add unwanted or unsubscribed channels) Also, these receivers are known for suddenly changing channels on their own.

I have two of the director pack receivers....They were free....I cant complain since DirecTV supplied them free of charge to add additional TVs.....But they are nothing special and I wouldnt pay for them and I will replace them pretty soon.....The main reason I accepted them was to get the Para Todos dish installed for free....

Funny, I was looking at a Dolby Digital RCA receiver as a possible replacement....I think it is the 485RG.....Even though I have concerns about RCA build, I would like a DD receiver....Might just get a HiDef receiver instead.....

actually if the hughes directors or executive pack would keep time on the guide and be bug free, i would like the reciever. The box is sort of "artsie" looking and it has sort of a cool neon blue moon indicating power on. And the remote blows the rca drd 485 Rg remote away. i owned the drd 485 RG and it did suck. i hooked up the component video(Pr Ps Y) from the reciever to my new rca 36 " tv and the picture quality sucked. The remote sucked and the light on the front of the box is too bright, brighter than previous models. The only thing i did like about the RCA is the network logos, they were well done, but i could never enjoy them because the scrolling on the guide was HORRIBLE !!. and the pig (picture-in-guide) was made smaller than previous models as well also. i would stay clear of any RCA model that has a RG at the end of it !! hey guess what, my hughes GCEB0A is keeping exactly perfect time for 8 days now, hope i didnt jinx it ??!

Sony, anyone? I've got three (one DirecTivo) and have never had a problem or been dissatisfied with any of them. The oldest one is 6 years old and has been turned on 24/7, as are all my receivers.

Good luck!

I have the Hughes Director Pak and it's been great. Mine doesn't loose time or have any of the bugs previously mentioned. Response time is super and the guide is the second best around (second only to UTV's EPG). My only little complaint is that I wish the pic in guide would stay on the channel when I scroll to look at another show..
It's a great little recv and the simulated surround sound is pretty cool too..

A few years back I had a Sony B2 and a B50- excellent.

I am new to your forum, but have been reading a bit. Just wanted to ad my 0.02 about the rca 485rg :( The srolling is pretty slow and it loses the date in the detailed info ie. (2002) for movie release date. I've found a way to speed it up a little and bring back the date. By doing a soft reset, And this has to be done every day  I've had the receiver replaced once and the second is the same way. Rca told that replacing the unit a third time wouldn't fix it, they said the 485rg just does't have enough memory built into it. I was looking into the Hughes gcebo but it looks like it has its share of bugs to . Any info on the Hughes gcebo would be appreicated. Thanks:)

:hi: again HarryD, I was curious if your pic in the guide still changes when scrolling ? And about the simulated surround sound do you mean it's not really surround sound? Do you use a prologic or dolby digital receiver with it ? would you recomend the Hughes gcebo executive director pack or warn them to stay away from it alltogather ? Sorry for all the (?)'s just trying to learn a little. Thanks Again

Craze,
I would by all means recommend the Hughes Director recv. It's a great little recv. I think it has the second best looking guide in DBS land (second only to UTV). The pic in guide does change when you scroll on the TV listings (if you keep the cursor on the channel (left side), it doesn't change. Again, this isn't the Executive model (the one w/ the APG). Mine only shows two hours worth of guide, if you scroll ahead, it has to download the guide info but it does so pretty quickly.
My simulated ss is a feature of the Hughes recv. I have a crappy old stereo recv and little bookshelf speakers but if I crank it up, the simulated surround sound isn't bad.
Sony also has a these recv, which is made by Hughes (A65 is DD) and B65 (I'm not sure if the B65 = my recv or the Executive model)

Hello Lorax, In reading your post, you speak of the director pack rec. I asume your not talking about the( Hughes GCEBO) If so what is the problem's with them, So you wouldn't recommend for someone to look into? Also stay away from the Rca485rg, you'll be sorry mine has been a dog since day one, even the refirbished receiver I got from rca is the same. :(
