I am a very patient guy, but...

My patience is running out very fast with this HR20. I pay a lot of good money each month and unlike a lot of you I didn't get my box for just the cost of shipping. I wouldn't buy a computer with this many bugs and be a happy camper, should I be happy with the HR20?

I am sorry any of the programmers for the HR20 that read this board I know you are working hard, but as a consumer I am tired and fed up with this thing that is supposed to be considered a DVR, a box that is supposed to record shows.

I have told a few people already that they shouldn't go with DTV just because of the issues that many of us are facing. One guy was going to sign up eventhough I discouraged him, that was until he was over at my house and we were watching TV. He decided to go with cable.

If I didn't hate the cable companies and I could get my NFL ST, I probably wouldn't be with DTV.

This is just my opinion, don't flame me for it.

No, you shouldn't be happy with the problems you've had.

I have two friends in the same situation and I told them to skip the HR20 and go with the H20. One has and he is VERY pleased with it. The other should be ordering his today. They can always upgrade to the HR20 later when most of the serious issues have died down.

I, on the other hand, have had very, very few problems in the 7 weeks I've had this thing, and am quite pleased. Based on the broad experience of users I've seen in the last whatever, (on these forums) there is a real problem with roughly 15% of the HR20 users' equipment or setup. That's just to high a number to recommend to one's friends, unless they are techno-geeks and like a challenge.

This is a good idea. Like you I have had great luck with mine and love it but there are some people out there with issues and it could not hurt to wait it out.

Not if they want a DVR. My parents are supposed to be getting the HD locals by the end of the year. They have had a directivo for probably 5 years now. There is no way I could convince them to go to a non-DVR just to get HD.
If your only choices are:

1. Flakey HD DVR
2. Reliable HD viewing with the option to upgrade to HD DVR later

Some would argue that those ARE the only choices...if so, I'll tell my friends to wait (and be without DVR) until things stabilize, that's all I was saying.

If one just "has to have" an HD-DVR, then that's a totally different scenario than I was positing. At that point, you're down to a crap shoot or an alternate provider. That how it is.

If the parents are happy with SD DVR, they are in a great spot...just wait it out.

The problem arises when we get ourselves into a "I want what I want when I want it, and the devil take the hindmost" mentality. This is a sure formula for disappointment. I'm not saying this is how it should be. I am saying this is how it IS. It's up to us to deal with it.

I meant it was good advice if they can wait for a DVR. I have an HR20-700S and it works great. The HR10-250 was moved to a guest room and I do not miss it at all.
I'd watch DVR on a 13" black-and-white TV to avoid being forced back to live TV.

Is cable an option for your parents? If so, most cable companies offer an HD DVR (non Tivo based) for lease. Then when D* finally gets the bugs worked out of the new HD DVR you can switch to D*. It's a good stop-gap measure provided cable is available and their service/equipment is reliable.

Good Luck!

HR20 - MPEG-4 HD Receiver - DVR
H20 - MPEG-4 HD Receiver - Non-DVR

Also (for now)
HR20 is Interactive
H20 is not

I feel the same way. I paid $300 for this thing. If I'd gotten it for free (or just shipping), I think I'd be much more patient with this box. But as it is, I paid $300 for a unit that is very unstable and unreliable. I called D* yesterday, but they refused to do anything for me unless I went through their troubleshooting. Which will of course include a full format and then ultimately a replacement unit. I think it's a software problem, so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. :(

Exact same problem and scenario. I am not a happy camper at this moment.

When I recommend or do not recommend, I try to keep the friend's needs in mind. For example, my neighbor just bought an LG HDTV, and I recommended the HR20. They do not watch sports, only series, so it is ideal for them. For any of my friends who want the sports subscriptions, I tell them to wait or go with other options until they fix the ability to watch/record the sports packages. It depends upon what is important to the individual consumer.

See that is the one bright spot right now with my HR20, the NFL ST plays and records fine for me. The only people that I have heard with problems are on this board. I can't figure out if this is really a software or hardware issue. Seems a lot of people have completely different problems. I think in reality it is a hardware issue, but no one will admit it. Just a theory.

No manufacturer produces any type of technology that is perfect and bug free. I'm sure a percentage of the HR20's produced are going to be defective in terms of hardware. I don't think the engineering is faulty as far as designing the unit, but no one should expect 100% perfect QC. A percentage will be defective, but that doesn't mean you recall all of them.
