After months of reading these forums and contemplating my upgrade options, I called DTV today and ordered my HR34 to replace my broken and battered HR20. Thanks to DBSTalk I was able to ask for and get a great deal on this box and the Cinema Connection Kit. Install will be Friday morning. :)

I wanted to thank the moderators and active members of this INCREDIBLE resource of information. I very much appreciate the opportunity to learn and apply this knowledge to get the best equipment at the best possible prices.

Sincerely,

A grateful reader. :)

Congratulations! I had a similar situation, an HR34 replacing an HR20-100. A truck roll couldn't be scheduled until Sep. 20. Since I already had swim, wireless CCK installed, I ordered from a third party and will swap it out myself. Directv will credit my account once the new box is activated.
sept 20th??? wow thats a long freakin time

Minot, ND is still recovering from last summer's flood, thousands of homes were damaged and hundreds destroyed. That, along with all the oil wells being drilled, are keeping the techs busy.

One question. I think I only have the SWM lnb. I currently have one wire to each of 2 dvrs. I'll replace the HR20 with the HR34. (No rvus). Even though I have 5 tuners, I shouldn't need to expand my swm, correct?
If its just 5 tuners total, your LNB is fine.
But you stated one wire each to 2 DVRs.

So one HR34 is 5 tuners, another DVR adds two more. If you have 7 total, still good with the SWM-LNB.

Congrats on the good deal!
I like the old HR20s. One of mine is still chugging faithfully along, been a good old box. Wish I could give the second one away to a good home as DirecTV didn't want it back, but sadly don't think that it could be activated.

Being a former Grand Forks resident I thought that I would have noticed your being in Minot but don't recall seeing that as your location until now. So do I have a faulty memory or has something changed?

Sure hope that Minot is recovering well from the flood. Luckily I missed out on the bad one in The Forks.

I lived in the Twin Cities for 15 years, but moved back to Minot (my hometown) in June 2011. One week before the flood.

Damn, what timing! Hope that you were far away from the Souris River.

I was high & dry, but my uncle and my in-laws both lived within 200' of the river. They each had 7' of water on the main floor. My uncle is a carpenter. He stripped everything down to the studs and rebuilt.

Finally made the jump?
No, he made a fine jump. Probably learned a lot from watching the Olympics.

BTW, I was told by DTV that this sort of swapout would be considered an upgrade and meant it would start a brand-new clock on a 2-year contract, even though mine originally ran out in 2009, and have been a loyal customer since 2004. Since I had just lived through a HR20 and its HR21 replacement both dying inside of 3 weeks, that was the last thing I wanted to do. I have fingers crossed on the second HR21 replacement which has made it a whole two weeks now.
