With all these trouble posts, I was just sitting here watching a little Walk The Line (in HD) and thinking how much I love my HR20! Let me add a bit here - We were watching and then were able to PAUSE a HD show, make some breakfast, come back and REWIND a little to remember what left off at and the sit right back down and resume. The whole is amazing.

Thanks to everyone!! Earl, DirecTV, DBSTalk, people of this forum ("Beta" testers) for getting us this far. Even a little thanks to TiVo for getting the ball rolling in a way. I know it's been available in other forms but I kinda think TiVo had a big hand in the DVR takeoff. Just my opinion...

Thanks! :goodjob:

I agree. With the new software upgrade, it's working quite well. Yesterday I fired up my HR10-250 to look at something and said to myself, "Yuck!". The Tivo interface looks primitive to me now.

You are not alone:D

I was already pretty pleased, and OTA pushed me over the top.

Still lots of work to do, but the progress and responsiveness (as demonstrated by the two "windowed" updates) is commendable.

My "evolution" from Tivo fan boy, to coming on board with the HR20 has alot to do with your observation here. I fired up the TIVO after not using it for 4 or 5 days and it didn't have the same feel. It felt like I was using Windows 3.1 or something. Good observation.

I am having SOME trouble with my HR20.

Remaining issues:

- White screens cause A/V blackouts
- Closed Captioning isn't perfect (it is on the HR10, on TVs, and it must be on the HR20)
- Occasionaly glitches needing RBR
- Overscan is a real issue that this box has that my HR10 just doesn't.

My main box is an HR10. I'm disappointed that the HR20's OTA tuners aren't as sensative as the H20, but they're not worse than the HR10 so I can't complain a lot.

I'm not ready to move to the HR20 yet as my main box. It is stable enough, but the CC issue is a big deal to me (I know I'm in a minority).

That said, I SO WANT THIS BOX TO BE READY FOR ME! I love the GUI, even without Dual Live Buffers I am ready to make this THE DVR in my house, and as soon as the closed captioning issue is fixed, I'm ordering another one.

I have no overscan problem at all with my HR20 - checked it out using the HDnet test patterns (which I have recorded on my HR20). Are you using HDMI or component?

Also remember the two tuners in the HR20 are driven by splitting the signal (same in the Hr10) which means each tuner receives just under half the input signal. If you really want to compare the H20 with the HR20 buy a cheap two-way splitter and drive the H20 from one of the splitter outputs, this will simulate the Hr20 split. That will be a better comparison. The H20 may still be better but you need to compare like-for-like.

If you lose channels on your H20 when you split the signal that's an indication your signals are marginal and you need a preamp to overcome cable losses and the splitter issue.

Hey Cap - As stated before, I'm jumping on your bandwagon for CC. It is useless on the HR20.

Just want to jump on board and say how much I love the HR20. My local picks up great on OTA and I've only seen one issue requiring an RBR. Generally happy here!

I have to give two big thumbs up to the HR20 as well. I'm still going to shout out for
.

I replaced an HR10-250 (HD) and an SAT-T60 (SD) system in my family room with two HR20 systems. I used to be able to record some programs in HD, but lack of disk space and concern for my LA HD stations going away led me to jump early. I've been very happy from the beginning despite the problems because I can now get my local stations in HD. OTA doesn't help me because there is a mountain in my way - I tried for a year to make it work. The stability of the new OS is great.

I've played some with the new ViiV features (using Twonky) and I can see times where this would be VERY handy to have. Music and Photos on the TV from a media server is a great concept now that I see what I can do with it.

Yep, I'm liking the HR20 over TiVo too, as far as, how easy the software interface and the remote is to use. It's going to be really cool when they get all the features turned on! Lots to look forward to.:D

I am on board with loving it. I guess some are just lucky and get good boxes? I am not sure, its puzzling why there are so many problems for some, and few or none for others.

If it was windows with varying environments, various drivers etc, I could see it. But everybody has the same box, same environment (as far as the "OS" is concerened). Maybe the peripherals connected to it are having some effect? Rather odd really. Just glad mine seems to be fine, knock knock on wood. And hope others problems get corrected in time.

Not even close to the "same environment" on every box. There are so many variables that no two boxes out there are the same, and that is what makes fixing these sporadic problems so incredibly difficult.

Not sure I follow you. What I mean is every box is rubber stamped from the same manufacturer, has the same circutry, firmware, hardware internally. From that perspective they are all identical unless hardware revisions exist and we recent purchasers are getting redesigns.

Thats why I said perhaps the peripherals that are connected are whats making the difference.

I understand what you're saying, but those things you mentioned aren't all the HR20 programmers have to worry about. Maybe a certain MPEG4 encoder in Detroit is sending down some bad info sometimes that causes a corrupted recording on the HR20. Maybe scheduling two shows on two certain channels a half hour apart screws with the scheduling logic in some unpredictable way. Those are the variables that are different on every box, and that's where the problems crop up.

Ah yes I see your point. I hadn't thougt of that. From that perspective, it almost is a windows like environment. Tons of outer stuff happening and working with all of it is a challenge. Unfortunately I see a lot of people blaming the HR20 for things like your detroit mpeg encoder example, or things that are cockpit errors, and calling the HR20 a piece of crap. But of course they have a right to expect it to work, and I presume it will in time for everyone. I guess HD is quite a challenge!
