Hello to all!!!

I need to upgrade and don't know what to get.

I'm trusting your experience to help me.

I'm a D* subscriber for about 18yrs and I still have the FIRST GEN. RECEIVER and DISH.

I'm wanting to go HD but I'm starting w/o the HD Monitor, it comes last.

The kids are grown and gone away working after college and I'm looking to go w/ maybe 2 rooms.

I've read in posts that I can use my old 18" dish but buy new horns?

I'm looking on E-bay but don't know what to purchase and a good price, individual or E-bay store?

I don't watch air channels, I get them through D*.

I have a stereo store here in town to get my wires from.

I'm sure I'm forgeting something so feel free to let know what your thinking.

Thanks for your posts,,,

ps, I've enjoyed reading all the posts, looks like a busy place!!!

18 years? Directv was only a concept in those days (actually much longer than that--I was in a discussion we had at Hughes about DBS in 1965).

You will probably do better getting new equipment directly from Directv than through E-bay, etc. HD will require a 5 LNB dish, not just an upgrade to an 18" dish. The two receivers currently available are the H20 and HR20, which is a DVR. The H20 currently is $99 and the HR20 is $299. This will include an upgraded dish as well as installation. As a long-time subscriber you might be able to get a better deal than that, however, particularly with the H20 (the HR20s are back-ordered, so they aren't as likely to deal right now). Both will work fine with a non-HD monitor (including the ability to view HD channels in standard definition), although HD looks much nicer.

I agree with Bob - you are going to want, and need, a completely new dish which is more complicated to install and align. Call DirecTV and see what they will do for you, but as a minimum you should be able to get an H20 (receiver, not DVR) and new dish, installed, for free or for very low cost. The HR20 (DVR) is back ordered to just about everyone right now, and DirecTV does not appear to be making any deals on it at the moment.
