I 'upgraded' to a Hopper/Joey system. I received my email that DISH has sent out the boxes to return my leased 622 and 722k. It also says that I may choose to use their return label and they have worked hard to negotiate a better rate than I could get with UPS Fedex, or USPS.

What? I have to pay for the boxes return. Never had to before...

For about the last year customers have paid for return. I thought it was only on cancelled accounts though.

Normally on an upgrade the installer picks up the old equipment. Your upgrade in " " suggests you had a better idea so maybe the added expense is part of that better idea.

Sounds like his 'upgrade' entailed an account in another's name. So, he probably cancelled his old account. Therefore a fee to return the leased equipment would be correct.

But, I'm just extrapolating here...

Perhaps 'upgraded' is just buyers remorse wishing that he had not. Not everyone who completes the upgrade considers Hopper/Joey to be that much better once they start tripping over the limitations (tuner conflicts, no OTA, minor bugs that feel major).

If you closed your old account the $15 fee per shipping label is normal. If you upgraded it is odd that the installer didn't take the old boxes. Unless you somehow managed an upgrade by mail (perhaps purchasing a Hopper/Joey system from a retail website?).

All the facts have not yet been exposed.

I believe DISH puts the exact same paperwork in every "return" box so that is why it would be mentioning 'cost' to return the equipment.

To my knowledge, when you upgrade especially if it entails a new contract and specifically upgrade to the Hopper, you do not pay for the return of equipment, but that's because Dish usually insists an installer do the work and they take the old equipment. Is there something being left out of the OP perhaps?

'Upgrade' was merely my cynicism peeking out. I always doubt whether new systems will be better than the established systems.

I did not change anything in my account/contract other than accept the 2 year commitment. I even asked the installers if they were taking the boxes. They said DISH was sending me boxes (not yet received). I'll update when I receive the boxes.

If the electronics are valuable enough to return, DISH should either have the installers take them or pay for shipping (IMO).

If you went thru someone local instead of calling in to get the Hopper upgrade, then Dish would send you boxes, but should not be charging S&H. Not in this case.

Exactly what I said. :) And your installer should have taken the boxes. In fact they usually insist. If you don't want to pay either call the installer and have them return the boxes, or contact a DIRT member here and see if they can get the cost waived, or give you programming or a discount to make up for the cost.

My last upgrade about 2 months ago was from a 211 to a 722K and the Dish installer took the old leased 211 with him along with my old Dish 500 and 300 and associated DP34s that were upgraded to a Dish 1000.2

What am I missing here? There return label is post-paid. I have returned many DVR's to dish and have always received a post-paid return label. I just take it to UPS and there is no charge to me at all.

I don't think that is post paid. That's the info provided when you cancel service and you return equipment. You have a choice of their label or if you think you can send it cheaper your label. If you use their label you are charged that cost. If you use your label of course you are not. I don't think there would be a need to mention anything about cost if they were sending a pre-paid label....

Actually, it is $17 per package. Smaller receivers like two 211s can be sent in one box. But, the original poster's equipment would have to be in two packages, so $34. As I just closed my account, I thought this fee only applied to account closures; but it is not the case.

I forgot the fee increase. It is a shame that the installer could not simply take the receivers with them.

I specifically asked the installers if they would take the receivers. The answer was No and DISH would send boxes.

Which in my opinion is better,I just can't trust anyone but myself to return receivers so I don't get charged the nonreturn amount on my account.

I also write down the tracking number(s) and follow it home, when it shows delivered I also print out a copy for my records.;)

I talked to DISH DIRT guy. He investigated anf found that I had been sent the emails that would normally go to someone who is cancelling their account.

No charges should occur.
