I've got a few dead HR20s at my home, the installers will not touch them
so I just have them sitting in my garage waiting for what I do not know.
The installers said to hang on to them in case DTV would like them back.

Anybody know how that works, do they call you?

Or should I just plug them into my Linux box and a

Call DirecTV. Chances are they were supposed to be sent back and if you don't
send them back they will charge you for them...

If they say they don't want them then you have 600GB worth of SATA drives.

I bet there's a 0% chance that they don't want them.. fight the urge to build that sata raid you've always wanted. Do the right thing and call D* to see how to handle it.

Yeah, you should send them back, D* will eventually stick it to you if you dont.

However, some ideas if you dont:

1 - Use the HR20 as the centerpiece of the target in a game of lawn darts.

2 - You could use it as the base of your xmas tree this year (classy)

3 - A hot pad for use when cooking

4 - You could always sell it on Ebay and look the other way

I did call D* a couple weeks back and the CSR was not sure
what to do (sounded odd)?
She said something to the effect of 'well I guess we could send you some pre paid
boxes but, why don't you just wait a while'.
I got the impression that maybe they had so many returned they did not know what to do with them all, and it was easier for them to not get it back, well probably in the short term anyway.

My wife was wondering, joking, about the stack of boxes and remotes and cables piling up. Asked if I was moonlighting as a D* installer...

I checked my D* contract. It says that if they replace a unit, I have 30 days to return it or a charge will be applied. That charge is based upon the type of receiver. The DVR Plus charge is $1000 if you do not return the replaced unit.

I can't think what you have to gain by not getting the RMA's and returning the broken units.

Why take that chance?
