If you're sick of polls ignore this thread. If you think this is a stupid poll, ignore this thread.

I'm posting this in both the R15 and HR20 forums specifically aimed at current customers of both of these units.

Assuming DirecTV would let you out of whatever commitment you have remaining due to your activation of your HR20(s) and/or they would replace your HR20(s) with HR10(s) that could receive MPEG4 HD signals, what would you do?

If you're interested, the R15 poll is here.

I would love a HR10 mpeg4 DVR only becuase I'm so accustomed to the Tivo interface. I originally had a ReplayTV (which I feel is superior to the Tivo interface) before I switched to the R10. I'm not too found of relearning interfaces. If I had gone from the ReplayTV to the HR20 it would've been an easy transition since they are fairly similar.

I need an option for "Keep an MPEG4 DVR that is stable". I have no need to swap an HR20 for an HR10. Doesn't help me six months from now. And I'm not so upset that I'm ready to leave D*.

Would I like more, you bet. More stable or at least more official info telling me my problems are known and being fixed. A detailed list thru Earl (or any dbstalk mod) will do. But hints whispered thru a backdoor aren't quite good enough. The backdoor isn't the issue. Earl has earned lots and lots of respect here. But I'd like more than hints.

Cheers all,
Tom

I voted "Keep my HR20. I have few problems with it." A more accurate choice for me would have been "Keep my HR20 even though I experience problems with it." I have a HR10-250 that I have operating as my "safety net" so when the HR20 messes up I don't "pop a gasket", I just switch over to the HR10 and watch the show. Occasionaly I get burned when I forget to set a recording on both machines and the HR10 doesn't record (or makes a bad recording), but all the important stuff has a season pass / series link on both boxes.

I'm not saying the HR20 doesn't work well most of the time. It's just that I can't count on it 100%. If I didn't have the HR10-250, I'd be much more vocal to D* about the problems.

Sad to say: I would return my HR20, cancel DirecTV, and install a Dish ViP622 in a heartbeat if I could get a full refund for the box.

I understand that sometimes new technologies have problems, I get it. I knew when I bought my HR20 that it was bleeding edge. But the current performance of the HR20 is so unacceptable that it absolutely begs a public statement by DirecTV. We have been incredibly understanding as customers. Incredibly understanding and patient. We all want this box to succeed, and DirecTV benefits from this goodwill. Some acknowledgement from them of the pain they are causing their customers would make a huge difference. Instead, silence which breeds more anger which breeds less patience and understanding.

And absent a miracle software upgrade in the next week or two, I probably will make the move to Dish. Even if I have to eat my investment in the HR20 box. If TV weren't somewhat important to us, we wouldn't have spent a bundle on HD sets and HD DVRs.

If any other consumer electronics equipment failed in the way the HR20 has, they would all be returned. It's only my feelings of allegiance to DirecTV that's kept me on the hook this long.

That was how I described option #2 in my post..."and/or they would replace your HR20(s) with HR10(s) that could receive MPEG4 HD signals, what would you do?"

It's all hypothetical, just a "what if" scenario.

Hypothetically speaking, I would take any HR10 given to me, and immediately throw it up for sale on Ebay. Use all funds gotten, and purchase myself more tech gear :)
If the HR10 would be MPEG4 capable, there wouldn't have been a need for the HR20's to have been rushed to market, hopefully bypassing alot of the growing pains that have been experienced so far, so I guess this poll is pretty much a useless exercise in hypotheticals.

:) my bad, missed that detail on the first time thru. Today, I voted #2. Let us hope that next week, I could more comfortably vote #1 (and all the R15 users could likewise.)

This is a nice variation (and better) of the poll (HR20) I did a couple months ago. It is more cleanly constructed than mine was. I hope you get at least the same number of responses I did (325). I will be VERY interested to look at two things:

a. The results of my relative satisfaction/optimism poll showed about 75% were at least somewhat satisfied. Will the number stay about the same?

b. Have conditions/users changed to the extent that the number will move significantly?

Both polls reflect satisfaction (as few would keep the HR20 if they were significantly dissatisfied and could easily bail), so while worded differently, they measure "generally" the same variable.

Thanks for putting it up. I hope you get high participation.

I did a poll saying just that a few months ago and 75% expressed being at least somewhat satisfied and optimistic for improvement. There were 325 respondents. Interestingly, your suggestion for a compound question was roundly criticized by a small number of people.

It seems, you can't please everyone. I like this poll, although one change in wording might have avoided your suggestion:

"I'm keeping my HR20 in spite of any problems it may have."

I'm very sympathetic with the poll creator. No matter how you word things, someone else (and I'm not referring to your suggestion here) decides how it coulda, shoulda, woulda been better and therefore the results don't mean anything, yada, yada, yada.

What I have observed is that even if the poll is reasonably well constructed and unbiased, those with an agenda (or experience) different than the clear results of the poll will find some way to invalidate the results (in their own mind), so they can maintain their particular point of view anyway. Their minds are made up, don't confuse them with the facts.

Reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkle song wherein the lyrics go, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest". Ain't it the sorry truth.:)

I need the "Swap the HR20 for an MPEG4 receiver that works" option. I have no problem with the Directv service or channel lineup, it's the hardware that is at fault.

I voted to keep my HR20 since I've only had a few minor problems since I got it.

I can live with it.

I'm not gonna go all ballastic and come here calling it a POS any time soon.

I will keep mine, D* will fix it, eventually. The small things I can live with, I use it mainly for live tv with maybe 10 series links, and I have a SD Tivo backing that up. So I'm good.

Hmm...didn't vote yet because the jury is still out. I like the unit, even better than my old standard Tivo D* DVR. But after a month some issues are starting to pop up. And I wonder if it's because of more use (i.e. more chances to see something buggy) or is the unit/software actually declines and becomes more buggy with age. If I were to vote today, I'd say keep it with the hopes that it gets better.

Wolfpack,
Your poll reminds me of how Democrats take polls. You're dividing the "Yes" vote into two categories thus making the "No" vote look that much more powerful. Granted at this point the "No" vote is still stronger even if you combine the two "Yes" vote categories. Just my .02 cents.
