It's the same thing that everyone else is experiencing.

I wake up and want to watch some early Sportscenter... but when I turn on my setup, the screen is black.
I can change channels (the banner across the top changes to show that function is working) but the screen remains black.
I cannot access my recorded programs.
I can turn the unit off and on but the result is the same.

I'm hooked in through HDMI, by the way.
And I do have the most current update.

Do you ever get it to work and if so, how?

Sorry Fly, folks post and it's hard to tell if they're truly looking for help or just venting.
You're right, it sounds like the black screen bug. Next to a RBR I don't think anyone has a solid work around or fix.
Are you trying to perfrom a specific task over the night, like a scheduled recording or anything like that. Does it stay on the same channel you left it the night before?

I've woken up the past 4 days straight without being able to watch my TV because of the black screen bug. This is ridiculous!!!

There have been HDM issues for some sets. If possible, switch to component cables and optical for sound. Have you reset the unit since this problem surfaced? If not, I would try a red button reset. Let us know what happens. May beother steps to try.

True, I was just venting. Sorry if it seemed like I was actually looking for a resolution, because I read these boards a lot and it seems like there isn't a fix for this yet. I just figured I would finally sign up and post something instead of just lurking all the time. :D

Occasionally I have overnight recordings, and those always work fine.

And yes, it stays on the same channel. I leave it on ESPN at night and when I wake up, and reset the box, it's still on ESPN.

I have reported in the black screen poll thread that I was able to get the box to return after I selected menu, checked satellite signal on tuner1 and tuner2, and selected done. In this case, the HR20 acted similar to the "searching for satellite" bug reported many moon ago. Might work for you...might not.

Yea, It's frustrating. Fortunetly I've only had it happen a couple of times. The funny thing is I have two HR20's and IIRC it happens on the least used of the two.
I could tell you were a lurker before posting because you used the correct terms. We're all looking for some common link, hence the config question, what wasa it doing blah blah blah.

There has to be some common denominator why this doesn't happen to some, only a couple times for some, and constantly for others. Difference in cabling (copper clad steel vs. solid copper core) for example causing voltage issues, I mean there's got to be something.

Which dish setup do you have, I haven't gotten the 5 lnb dish installed yet because of the backup in Chicago area. They told me late Feb but couldn't promise me a date. So I have my hr20 setup with a 3 lnb dish for now and using an OTA antenna to get the locals in HD and an HDMI connection. I have not had the black screen yet that everyone complains about. I have had my hr 20 for about 3 weeks now and haven't encountered a problem yet, (nock on wood and cross my fingers) except for the fact that the OTA tuner is very weak and can't pull in CBS at all, and is very iffy on ABC.

Are the MPeg4 channels the ones causing the problem. Since I won't receive any of the mpeg4 locals until I have the 5 lnb dish installed, I'm wondering if that is why I haven't encountered the problems many have reported. Are people encountering the black screen bug leaving the channel selected to an HD local when the shut it down? Or does this happen regardless of the selected channel.
I guess I'll find out Friday when I do a self install of the slimline 5 lnb I bought on ebay since I couldn't wait for DTV to come do an install.

This is just ridiculous...just when you think these nimrods might finally have it fixed, they make it worse...

I wish I could speak w/ my wallet and deep six DirecTv, but I like my NFL too much...

God I hate this crap...

I had the black screen problem once or twice a while ago but changing the channel a few times fixed it for me.

I've had the black screen, no sound, remote unresponsive problem a couple of times and the only fix for that was resettting the unit.

There are multiple bugs that have been called "black screen" there is one where the screen just goes black and a channel change will fix, there is one where it is black and you can change channels and they are all black that requires a RBR, and there is one where the screen is black and the HR20 is locked up and requires a RBR.

I doubt its related to solely to HDMI. I have more than one unit and the bug is present on both the HDMI and Component receiver connections. I have had to do RBR on both of these units several times in the last week.
