OK - you guys have a mountain of fantastic info and discussion here, so I'd like to start this new thread to bring some discussion points together.

What I've seen a lot on threads here:
1. Poor/delayed/cancelled installations
2. Lack of HR20s virtually everywhere

I have an install scheduled for 11/5 but fear #1 and/or #2 above might happen.

I have no fear about doing the install myself.

So the questions are:

Would you do it yourself?
and
Where can we find the hardware? (local Best Buy and CC are out of stock with no notice on when they'll get more).

Thanks to all.

I bought mine at Best Buy, called and scheduled the install for 6 days later, installed on time. I really had no installation/supply problems at all. I guess I was pretty lucky. :)

I had mine installed on Saturday with no problems. I ordered it back in September when I knew I would be moving in to my new house. The install went fine and the installer brought the HR20.

I had mine installed through Directv a week ago without issues. I already had an H20 and an AT-9 dish.
Did you have the rest of the hardware (multi-switch, cables) etc. or did D* supply the rest? Did D* charge you for the installation 'cuz you had your own equipment?
Thanks.

Did Best Buy do the install or did they bring in a third-party installer? And did they charge you for it?
Thanks.

I bought my unit at Best Buy. Directv handles the installation. I called them and informed them I had purchased an HR20 and wanted it installed. They came out, setup the dish/switches/extra cabling/etc for free.

Earl has already said that is incorrect.

I will say it again... the HR20 is simply sold out right now.
They have backorders accross the board.

The unit is most definently not on hold.... And in fact in the last week production has been increased significantly to try and meet the demand.

LOL. The HR20s are selling so fast that they are sold out nationwide and the demand cannot be filled. I have heard that more than 100,000 (unverified source) have been produced so far and they are gone. Perhaps the reason is that for the majority of HR20 users, the sky is actually NOT falling. I am sure that just chaps a whole lot of people who tune in here regularly. They are going to sell or give away millions of these boxes and everything is going to be OK.

As I pointed out in another thread. It is entirely likely that RETURNS/EXCHANGES may be adding to the supply problems. Some members on this site have reported being on their 3rd or 4th replacement. Just a thought!

Possibly. Many are going to be deemed "No-Defect-Found" and shipped right back out since most users cannot tell the difference between a known bug and an actual DOA unit. It is not possible to know the actual numbers so you have a point.

it would help if the csrs actually had more of a clue than the users
