I have an H20 coming to give me OTA until the whole HR20 shambolic OTA tuner question gets sorted.

I don't intend to hook it up to my AT9 dish > leaving that exclusively for the HR20 > my Silver Sensor always worked just fine w/HR10, anyway [before I gave it away]. Thought the HR20 was getting OTA -- real soon!

Do I need to have this critter hooked up to the dish to activate it? Can I just hook it up to the OTA antenna and rock?

The H20 needs to be subbed to activate the ATSC tuner, not sure if it needs to remained subbed though. It's not a good choice for OTA use only and if you got it through Directv you'll need to sub it or they will charge you a penalty after a certain period of time.

What is a good choice for OTA only?

The H10 would work with just a dish connection, it's only required to boot then can be disconnected. Pretty much anything older then the H10 should work fine for you.
