My HR20-100 has intermittent squealing noises. Sounds like a bearing. At first I thought it could be the lap-top cooling fans running on the usb. Not. Then I thought turning off the unit would stop the squeal. Squeal still happens.

Does the hard drive stay spun up when the power lights are off? Is there an internal fan that may run until the unit cools? Has anyone changed a fan? If I must replace the hard drive will the internal stay spun up?

It's possible that what you're hearing is the case vibrating or the access card vibrating. Both are much more common than a bearing going bad. The next time it happens see if a little pressure on the case will help, or if touching the access card helps. If so, try putting some pieces of felt or paper towels under the DVR.

But yes, the fan and the hard drive can both be running when the unit is in standby (turned "off.")
