I am looking to buy a used 942 unit on Ebay and I see alot of folks asking about the internal smartcard's revision number on the units before buying. What is the significance of this and why do people want to know this before purchasing a used receiver?

I think the revision number is important for hackers. They are looking for a certain revision for some reason. Don't worry about it.

If they're asking for the ID number (S00___ for the smart card and R00___ for the receiver), as opposed to a revision number, it is so they can check with Dish to make sure the receiver isn't leased and doesn't have any unpaid charges.
