That's not bad,but not the best either. If you you have something on top of it might I suggest a laptop cooling pad. I use plastic bottle caps to raise the DVR higher to let more air pass through. I find it runs slower when it reaches high temp. So if you can try to keep it in the lower 120s.

For the HR20-700, a good internal temp should run around the low 120's and for the HR20-100's, it's around the low 100's or high 90's.
So, depending on your DVR model, 109 degrees could still be considered a bit hot.

Personally I use a Targus laptop colling pad which I power from the rear USB port on the IRD. I simply turn the pad over and it sets on top of my unit. It makes a huge differance and I saw an immediate change for the better in terms of stability and heat extraction.
For my system, the dissapation of heat is critical due to the placement and shere amount of equipment installed as you can see below. I have everything installed in a hallway closet with IR control. for those interested I installed a slinet exaust fan (fart fan for those in the industry) to expell the heat into the attic and draw cool air from the halway from the 1" gap at the bottom ogf the door.
Air exchange is a must under a senario such as this.

Monoprice has a 9.99 laptop fan (with additional USB ports) that lays on top of the HR2x nicely and exausts to the front or back.
Before buying a cooling pad.........trying cutting 2 pieces of 2x4 or other material and put them under the DVR (don't block any cooling vents) This "may" be enough to lower your temp number. This allows more air to circulate around the DVR. Worked for me anyway.
Gee, I wonder what's wrong with my HR20-100. Mine currently reads 95 and it sits on top of the HR10. I do have it raised about an extra 1/2 inch. The HR10's temp is 46 deg C (114F).

Excellent advice. People used to put plastic bottle caps under their UTV's to keep them cool. I bought a pack of thick stick-on rubber feet and put two under each foot of the UTV, raising it about 3/4 of an inch. I haven't done anything on my HR20's. The one in the living room HT cabinet runs in the low 120's. I have fans to circulate air in the cabinet and there is plenty of open air inside it. The bedroom HR20 is on a top shelf in a large closet and it runs in the 115-120 range as does the one in the guest room that's sitting on a dresser with a 19" LCD TV on top of it. The HR20 in the kitchen sits vertically on its right side on a shelf in the laundry room/pantry. The feet are against a wall and the top and left side are about an inch from other things on the shelf. It never runs over 105. The laundry room is not any cooler than the rest of the house, so my guess is the vertical orientation is making the difference (they are all identical HR20-700's).
My equipment is in our "media" closet (6' x 14') behind our TV room so I had more options for shelving. I found a 3-shelf wire rack at Lowes that was wide enough to hold components so I bought 2 and combined them to make a 6-shelf unit. There's plenty of space above each component and air moves freely around everything.
I patched into an HVAC line and added a vent to the closet and keep it cool.
Even with all that, My HR20-700 still runs around 125 degrees.

Try raising it anoither 1/2 inch as I did.
