Is a network connection needed?

Network connection not necessary. Guide is update over the satellite feeds.
But if no network connection nor a phone line, ordering PPV and other specials by remote becomes a problem.

If you need more ports, I recommend a simple 8 port switch. Not a router, but a switch. They regularly go for $19.99 and I see them on sale all the time for $9.99

Then you can connect PS3, HR20 and six more things to your network. The switch goes anywhere after your router and plugs into any of the router ports.

Yup, Network is optional, but can be useful. A small network switch can be helpful.
