Does the phone line have to be connected for the DVR to work?
I don't have a land line so it's not connected.
DTV tells me the service has been activated on my account but it's not working.

You do not need a phone line for DVR service. Make sure they have activated the "DVR service" on your account.

What exactly is not working?

You have to call DirecTV support back. I had the same problem several times. Either they didn't activate the DVR service on your account or they have the wrong DVR model listed for you.

I'd agree there. Make sure you say "I have the HR20-700, the new HD DVR plus receiver and I need to the DVR service activated for it". That should use about all the words needed to get them to their correct call script. Hopefully. :eek2:

And to make the challenge just a bit harder, the DirecTivo DVR activation command is different than the DirecTV DVR activation command - so simply saying you have a DVR isn't enough.
