Is a pole mounts an extra charge install?

A friend of mine is looking to upgrade to HD but his current regular service dish's roof installaton is starting to lose LOS to 101 due to trees. He is starting to lose channels like ESPN. He thinks he will need to move to a pole mount in the yard. Is that an extra charge item? Also, will they provide a pole or shoud he cement one (what size) first?

Yes pole mounts are a extra charge but I am not sure what the charge is. I am sure someone will stop by shortly with a answer for you.
As per DirecTV, if ordered a dish relocation from them, it's a $49 charge. But that's a relocation, and the tech will probably charge extra for burying cables. Not sure if you went directly to the install company, but I'm someone will chime in about that. I know it varies, but there should some range of pricing
It is my understanding that if no LOS is available from the roof that a pole mount is N/C. I think, sometimes, that D* policies vary from day to day.

Yup, that is the rule. But I think it is only fair to at least tip the tech for pole mounts. They are a lot of extra work.

A tip and a cold one by all means:)

A NLOS pole mount should be no charge. If a LOS can be found anywhere else, there can be a charge. It depends on your installer.
IMO instead of a tip by the customer , D* should pay its installers a decent wage. An installer, two togehter actually installed my Hr21 and multiswitch and said the job only paid 20 bucks. I got the impression someone cold make more money on unemployment. They did a crappy job but after hearing that I wasnt going to complain.

I just fixed it myself. This kind of low pay leads to poor workmanship and this is a bad reflection on D*.

I'll preface my comment by saying that I've always tipped my installers based upon how good a job they do. The last guy made $30 off me because he did a great install.

With that said, <rant on>there's no way I'd have tipped for that job that you got. What someone else makes for a job isn't your issue. You may feel their pain...but they took the job, and they have a responsibility to you, to their employer and to themselves to do the best job, regardless of anything, period.

I'm sick and tired of hearing how crappy a job the installers have and how little pay they get...that's just too bad for them. Quit then. But don't you dare come out to my house and do a crappy install because your pay sucks. People like that would suck at any job they would have...so maybe it's better that they're installing dishes instead of something else where they would suck at it and put peoples lives in danger.

Both of the installers I've had over the years have been great....the last one even "stole" my second install from someone else. I guess he knew if he did a good job again that he'd get a good tip...and he did.

Bottom line, they took the job, do it to the best of their ability regardless of all else. If they don't want to do that, get the heck off my property.

Yeah, but then D* will over book those installers too, push them to do things fast rather than quality. Bottom line, D* is worried about money first and getting the most customers in per day they can before they are worried about quality. Its sad, but its true. Its hard to be a good guy working for them, and watching HACK JOBS making nearly double your weekly pay. Imagine how that would make you feel.
Even better is when they find out that you do a good job, so you get routed to fix all the screwed-up jobs for service-call pay that the hacks got paid full-install pay to do. Then the hacks are making triple or more what you make, because they have you coming behind them to fix all their problems.

Of course, the HSP neglects to charge them back, because "they're getting a lot of jobs in."

BT,DT, and not doing it again.

That is what I was gonna say!

My fav was the explanation for why I shouldn't get paid for an A/O that included an extra drive and over an hour + cable;........."he is a new guy and had never done a wall fish. He didn't have the right tools but he did you a large one by letting the customer know it would be around twenty bucks"

If I buy the pole & concrete and ride it around in my truck a pole in concrete is $75.00. The dig in is $2.00 per foot if you have to trench four cables.

I don't know who buys the pole and concrete, but here pole mounts are the norm and are included in the free install for HD. I helped with the trench, but there was no charge there, either.

In rural areas, this may well be the norm, and the supplies may come from the HSP, who knows their area and that few installs could be done otherwise.

In my area (SF Bay Area - heavily suburban), pole mounts are almost never used, are always custom, and usually require a reschedule because no techs carry the tools or supplies to do one as a matter of course. On the other hand, we carry custom mounts that aren't used other places, for the same reason pole mounts are used in yours: because they are the most suitable solution for most customers in our area.

This is one of the reasons why the sat companies don't want to define a "standard install": the conditions vary too much across the country.
