I just got the 622 and it has a HDMI output but my tv has only DVI input. I will buy an adaptor but I wondering if HDMI sends both audio and video out or if I have to connect rca plugs for the audio.

Well, I just checked another forum and someone asked the same question. The answer was that DVI does not support audio. I guess HDMI may be able to send both audio and video out but the DVI of my tv will only pick up the video.

If all you want is right/left audio from your TV speakers, the HDMI carries that just fine, unless there is something weird about the VIP622 (I don't have one.)

Actually HDMI is perfectly capable of carrying 5.1 audio. Its the 622 that only passes 2.0 to your TV.

You can run HDMI to DVI via an adapter, which passes Video but no Audio. Or there are several places like cablesforless.com or monoprice.com that sell cables with HDMI on one end and DVI on the other. Then, for audio, you can run the RCA plugs to your TV audio input or use Toslink fiber cable to pass audio to an amplifier with Toslink inputs.

The same audio setup works for Component, (which is Video only) if for some reason you want to go that direction, like if HDMI video ever fails to work.

I have only one HDMI input on my HDTV. I run my ViP622 into that and my HDMI output DVD player into the DVI socket on the HDTV, with audio passed to the amp via Toslink fiber cable. So, with TV, I can listen to 622 programs though the TV speakers in Stereo or pipe it through the amp with the Toslink for 5.1 audio. I listen to DVDs in 5.1 via the Toslink connection to the amp.

You mean that the 622 doesn't pass multi channel audio through the HDMI port as 5.1 LPCM or native DD? I plan on upgrading my audio (not speakers) next year and would like all my audio sources (BD, HD-DVD, SA-CD, HTPC, and Dish) to be HDMI. Why would E* hamper DD pass through on HDMI?

As a side note: HDMI 1.0 is capable of carrying up to 8 channels of 192/24 audio along with DD, and DTS.

I wasn't really referring to what comes thru the cable, but I was assuming that the TV only had left and right speakers.

I'm sure you are correct as to HDMI's capability, it was the TV I assumed was the limiting factor in this case.
