When lightning struck nearby, it seemed to have zapped our DVR's. We had an HR20 (-700, I think), and an HR21-700 that we purchased last year for $299. They replaced them with HR21-100's. We were still having HDMI issues and we ordered a new HR21-700.

The brown box arrived with the date on the model being Oct. 2007. On the box, the tag reads HR21-700C-R. I specifically do not want rebuilt or refurbished since we are paying $200 for it, plus the lease fee. Is there a way to know if this is a new DVR? When we inquired, the CSR told us it was the newest model. If it isn't, is there a way to specifically request and actually receive a new model?

We had excellent performance with the original HR21-700 and would like to have that again, that's why we'd like to start with a new DVR. Thanks.

Ok well it's a refurb. It's simple the "R" is refurb. the only real way to get a "new" dvr is go out and get it. Having said that. The rufurbs work well. Why not try it. Do you have the pp? If you do they will cove it even with a lightning strike. They did for me. It took out four IRD's including 3 HDVR's. I got refubs, but they work perfectly and have since the time I installed them.

Since I don't own my HR21, does it come with a PP?

What about the dish?

Your HR21 is leased, and as such would be replaced if defective.
EVERYTHING else isn't covered, so the dish, cables, switches, remotes would need the PP.
However, I believe that without the protection plan you'll be paying $19 for shipping of a replacement. That's included in the PP... at least that's my recollection.

Thanks guys... Can you save me a trip to directv.com and give me a rough idea on what the PP costs (hardware in sig) ? (or did I miss that above? I'll look after I post)

I feel OK with fixing cables and dish re-aligns, but I know there is very little I can do if the box (HR21 or AM21) goes belly up.

PS. Sorry to hijack your thread okbyme!

No need for a rough idea; it's $5.99/month. No matter how much equipment is on your account.

For me, with 7 receivers, I think it's a pretty good deal :)

the PP is $5.99 a month. It's worth it to me. Don't get everyone started on that. use it. some don't. Decide for your self. I don't want to get this thread off topic here.

Protection Plan is $5.99 a month. Once you add it it takes 30 days to fully kick in and you have to keep it 12 months. It covers everything and if you need something in the first 30 days you will get it at a discounted price.

Miami1683, thank you for that great answer/explanation. That was exactly what I needed to read.

Since the CSR could not guarantee to ever send a new one, we decided to get a refund on the return of the -700 that we purchased from them and will keep the -100. They said the only way to be sure and get a new one was to go buy one at a local store. They also said that they reuse the boxes, but the circuit boards are all new and tested twice. I guess I thought the refurbs are what this board is all about.... problems. But, I stand corrected. Thank you for the info.

I don't know, but it seems to me if some yoyo (hmmm... like myself) is foolish enough and willing to pay for a new box, why can't they just send a new box? What's it to them? Since the -700 worked well before, I wanted another -700, but our stores only sell the -100.

Anyway, we'll wait to get the current update and hope it will fix the HDMI issue that we didn't have with our old -700 box.

And BTW, we don't have the PP.

Eric, no problem with the new direction of this thread. I'm good. ;-)

Thanks a bunch! I'm very happy with the info you've given me.

If you have a Costco membership, you can pick up a new receiver (usually an HR21) for $169 there ...

From what I've seen from the reman HR20-700R that I received is that a lot of these boxes are in fact new. Mind was perfect, no dust, no scratches, no grubby fingerprints. I get the feeling that batches of these boxes failed QA due to poor quality control of parts suppliers and whole containers full of them get recycled to manufacturing for fixes/updates and get labeled as remaufactured.

Mine looks like, smells like, and works like new.

I think they were also swapping out tons of perfectly good boxes as a result of poor installations. There is a Thread where RobertE has stated they have actually began to go back now that they reealize the number of poor installations that were done.

Just wanted to make sure you know that you are not "buying" those boxes. They are all leased. The "cost" is an upfront lease fee.

WHat D* is doing is no different that what the cable cos do... rarely, if ever, will you get a new box from the Cable Co. Yeah, Iknow that you['re paying an up front fee with D*, but I pay the upfront fee and $4.99 per month on the lease or access fee. My cable Company didn't charge an up front fee, but they did charge almost $17 per month for each box... and those were always refurbished.

About the only way to guarantee a new box is to buy one at Costco or Best BUy. those are usually not refurbished.
