Is it really worth it??

Season's Greetings to all!
Santa (my wife) gave me the coveted Permission Slip for a plasma finally this year, and I'll be picking up my Hitachi shortly. Happy Day!
I have gotten so much good info from folks on these DTV boards as I slogged through three R15 units over the past nine months and finally bought a used R10 TiVo which has been trouble free for the past several months.
Now I am faced with the crisis of what receiver to get for HD. I can receive HD OTA in Chicago no problem, but the R10 can't record them. I'd like to have an HR10-250 to keep the TiVo platform because it is nearly 100% dependable and may buy one off eBay for several hundred dollars.
However, the HR20-700 from DTV is only $200 and I'm told they're now back in stock by the CSR I just spoke with.
My questions: reading through these posts the past couple hours it seems like the exact same issues that I faced with my three crapola R15s months ago are STILL there.
What do you all think of the HR20s?
How much longer with the TiVo HR10 work (i.e. MPEG2 vs MPEG4) to receive and record DTV HD shows?
I guess I just need some direction...
Happy New Year, and thanks.

And Seasons Greetings to you, glad you've got the big Christmas gift (a loving wife).

I will like the HR20 in time. I had a number of problems the first month, but I've been mostly solid since. That last batch seem to be more a problem with guide data not with the HR20 itself. But I'm still very gunshy after it locked up on the first night of two weeklong trips missing many recordings...My consistent suggestion is to keep your R10 as an active backup until you are satisfied with the HR20.

Since you've seen the R15, you can tell if your family will adjust to the differences in the user interface. My non-technical wife seems to have adjusted relatively well.

The HR10-250 will work on OTA until it dies and on the SD until D* turns it of--if they ever do (and I've seen nothing indicating they will or won't.) And it will receive MPEG2 HD of most of the existing channels thru most of 2007, I'm guessing. They have to replace all the MPEG2 HD receivers and DVRs before they can turn off the MPEG2.

One last note, the Tivo is not going forward from D*, but it is modifiable for new features; whereas the HR20 is moving forward with new features.

Good luck, HTH

However, no modification or tweek will get the HR10-250 to work with the MPEG-4 stream.

(Check that, I am sure someday someone will find a way to replace the MPEG decoder chip, and the tuners... but it most definently won't be for even the "advanced" tweakers out there)

LOL, sorry Earl, you are most correct on both counts. :)

Cheers,
Tom
I am on my 2nd HR20, this one is perfect !!!
I have been really happy with my first and only HR20.
I have two hr20s and for the most part, they are now pretty stable. I did have the "partial" bug on earlier s/w releases, but have only had one or two rbr on the current 10b release, due to loss of remote control function.
I really like the UI now, although when I got my first hr20, it took me a couple days to re-orient myself after using the hr10 since it first was first released.
