At the bottom of the "3 months free" page, the fine print says that the service will automatically continue at $4.99/mo. at the 3-month expiration. Can you cancel at/before the end of the free period?

just a fyi. If you have a grandfathered base package i.e. choice plus, etc. if you cancel the HD extra pack it requires you to choose a new base package so you will loose your old package and its old pricing.

That might be only if you use the website to make the changes (adding the pack may also indicate this). Changes should still be available by phoning Directv without losing the grandfathered status.

The HD Extra pack has nothing to do with the base package. It's a separate line item. No one at D* lied to you. The CSR was correct. You can drop the Extra Pack before it goes chargeable and keep your base package.
