I'm due to get an HR21 in a coupla days (after two prior failures to install it). It will replace a beloved HR10 -- but of course I want those extra HD channels.

I've read that a major failing of the HR2x is the lack of wishlists, coupled with the fact that searches turn up channels you don't get and (unbelievably!) Autorecord schedules recordings for such channels.

A workaround could involve using a web-based Wishlist search. Is there anything like that?

Ideally, such a website would let you construct searches in the manner of (or better than) either the HR10 or the HR2x, and could even send you an email alert when a matching program is coming up on a channel you receive.

If there's no service like that yet, is there an entrepreneur out there who'd like to provide it?

First, you can replicate most wishlists using the advanced boolean searches on the HR2x. But if you are a heavy wishlist user you may still be disappointed.

On the DirecTV web site you can actually do suggestions. Rate your programs you like ala Netflix and you'll get a list of suggested shows and with online scheduling you can record them to your DVR. I know that's not a wishlist but you may find it useful.

The HR2x's advanced boolean searches would be useful if the results would exclude channels I don't receive. That's still a problem, isn't it?

So far I'm unimpressed with the idea of trying to train DirecTV's web site so that it'll make suggestions. I've tried the website's interface; I find it clumsy and replete with bad suggestions (just like TiVo's own suggestion feature).

You sound to me like a D* fanboy.

While all searches will include all channels, even those that you do not receive, I believe that AutoRecord Series Links do correctly only record thsoe channels that you get.

Sorry to say this, but somebody has to: You sound like a D* fanboy.
Ummm, why would you say that? I simply answered the question asked which was no, there are no wishlists, yes you can replicate some of that functionality of the wishlist and made mention of online suggestions since you asked about online searching. Please tell me how that is a D* fanboy?

If you don't want an honest answer then don't ask the question.

Oh by the way you can limit an autorecord search to a certain channel range which might help in terms of recording on a channel you don't get. Depends on what you are trying to record. But you probably don't want to hear about that, you just want to complain and moan that you can't have Tivo anymore. so sorry.

Scott's defensive response sorta ticked me off.

My original post simply asked if there was a web-based Wishlist search that would let you construct searches in the manner of (or better than) either the HR10 or the HR2x, and might even send you an email alert when a matching program is coming up on a channel you receive.

Since then I've found two possible candidates:

XMLTV Importer for SageTV
http://www.lmgestion.net/@en-us/4/22/59/86/article.asp

Cisco IP/TV Viewer
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/iptv/v32/viewer/user/guide/chap1.html

... but I'm not sure about how to use either one of them, and whether the "XMLTV Importer for SageTV" can be used without SageTV itself. (It seems you have to have a LAN system administrator to use the Cisco product.)

This thread isn't about bonscott87. It is about trying to come up with a solution to a problem that you posed. That's exactly what you got. No references to technology that isn't yet available or trying to defend DIRECTV's business decisions.

If you were spoiling for a fight, you didn't get one. I can't imagine how anyone could have given a more matter-of-fact answer.

harsh, have you noticed that all the answers I've gotten so far assume that I'll simply have to make do with whatever D* has provided?

The question was (and still is) about web-based solutions (in general, not just from DirecTV).

I miss the "wish list" feature so if you find a web based alternative let us know.

The issue with services other than those provided by DIRECTV is that there isn't any integration into the remote programming feature.

I was only looking for a way to find programs using (maybe complex) combinations of criteria (as in, or better than, a TiVo Wishlist), maybe get e-mail alerts about upcoming matching programs, and then tell the HR21 what to record myself.

You are funny... This is a site, when someone asks a question they will usually get the answer, and then maybe any and all alternatives that might also work for the proposed question. If you don't like getting more help than you asked for, then don't post... You were rude to scott... However, I will still follow in others footsteps and answer your question....

I have never heard of a web based wishlist creator, so to speak. As someone else mentioned, let us know if you find one... And we'll add it to the HDDVR wishlist of features we have created. Directv adds things we want all the time. as for ARSLs on the hr21... they work great, and if you are really creative, you can actually create better ARSLs that will record for you than a tivo wishlist... you have to really consider how you create them. Also, they record based on the Channels I get feature being accurate, so if it were ever to record a program on a station you don't get, it will have nothing to do with the HR21 and everything to do with a authorization issue that directv is working on... and is about 90% accurate now, compared to a couple months ago.... a negligible amount of shows get recorded on my units that are on one station that needs to be fixed, and I am pretty sure it will get fixed shortly... I could get around it if I want, but its to rare an occurrence for me to care. Also, in case your making ARSLs for sports, they have created something called gamesearch. If a unit ever is tuned to a game that is blacked out it will search for another channel that they game may be on that you are authorized to receive and will tune to it... weather your tuneing manually, or if its supposed to record a game... I have found that with this new feature and in combination with boolean words, the HR21 is far better at wishlists for sports than my tivo is.

inkahauts, thanks a lot for that long, informative post. I do like getting more help than I asked for. Scott offered less. I've done a lot of reading and already knew about the HR2x's advanced boolean searches and DirecTV.com's suggestions. I asked about web-based string searches.

Part of my motivation, which I haven't brought up anywhere until just now, is that the 50-item limitation (which I believe applies to Series Links and Autorecorded searches taken together) mitigates against setting up a lot of Autorecorded searches.

I'm pleased to hear from you that the problem of Autorecord scheduling on channels you don't get is gradually going away. Please clue me in on the authorization issue you referred to. (Searching this site for "authorization channel record" didn't seem to turn up anything helpful.) Why did you say it has nothing to do with the HR21?

I hear you about the superiority of the HR2x for sports recording. Automatically tuning away from a blacked-out game to the same game on another channel sounds like magic; I can't wait to see that. I guess the switch to a better channel would not happen until broadcast time, after a black screen was detected, right? I hope it knows to give preference to HD when switching.

Gee, I offered you options available to you. Shoot me.

Not sure what was wrong with this statement that got you so upset:

"First, you can replicate most wishlists using the advanced boolean searches on the HR2x. But if you are a heavy wishlist user you may still be disappointed."

Wow, sorry I didn't go into great detail. And the statement said that it may not be good for you depending on how you used Wishlists in the past. Figured if you wanted more information on that you'd ask. If not, no biggy. Not flame me for no reason at all. Good luck but you really need to look objectively at the posts above and look in the mirror.

Sorry about calling you a fanboy for insufficient reason. (I didn't realize it was such a loaded word!) I guess I was ticked off about getting info that I already knew instead of an answer to my question. But you had no way of telling what I did or didn't know.

I also apologize for my post that included "...posters like him are thick on the ground..." That was really uncalled for. I was still frustrated about getting non-answers to my question. I'm editing out that remark and qualifying my earlier name-calling.

Thanks, appreciate it. I think you weren't getting the answer you were looking for about online options because they really don't exist and if there were you wouldn't be able to schedule to your Tivo or DirecTV DVR automatically from them anyway. So we are "stuck" (of course some of us have other choices) with what we have.

Good luck!
