I called DirecTV and asked if they had any promotions for Showtime, for which my 3 mo free trial had just ended. "Sure, how about 12 months free?" Yes, please! :) "At the end of 12 months it will roll off your account, you don't have to call to cancel." Thanks, DTV rep!

I make it a point to call every 2-3 months and ask about promotions. Can't hurt to ask, right?

Agreed! I do the same thing every few months. This week I canceled Starz and they gave me an additional $5 off my base package for 6 months. I didn't even ask for it.

One of the many reasons I love Directv!! :D

I would make sure to call back when the promotion is about to end. I've never heard of one that ends automatically. You may get re-upped.

I just came off a 12 month free promo for Showtime...rolled right off today without me calling in.

I've had many free promos (3 mo, 6 mo) in the past that just rolled off the account...if not, they are supposed to inform you at time you agree, but as always, YMMV.

Called again last Friday...added Cinemax at $10/mo...not "free" but they gave me free DVR service** credits for 3 months ($8/mo) + $5/mo credit for 6 months to offset. That one I'll have to cancel in October as it won't just roll off.

CSR (Retention specialist) *specifically* said one should always call every once in a while to check on promos + that they like to give them out to loyal customers (I've been w/DTV for 10+years). :D

**I'm grandfathered in to TiVo lifetime service, so I don't even normally pay for DVR service! Have been given this credit previously as well.

Even as a Premier sub it never hurts to ask. I call every 13-14 months and play the "cancel card". I usually end up getting $30-40 off per month for another year. I think having a great pay history and some longevity as a sub along with being extremely polite to the CSR's plays a role in getting these discounts. But it pays off for them. I've gotten a few friends to sign up and they are all low maintenance customers.

I asked about Showtime the other day and no offers for me except the 2 for 1 with Starz. I think its all dependent on what they have given you lately. After getting a free HR34 and WHDVR, half off NFL ST, Free HD for 24 moths, I think I'm tapped out. So I used a different angle and will get a $25 debit card directly from Showtime [link] . Just have to sign up for 3 mo's and send in the bills (can't combine this with the 2 for 1).
