So I currently have an old school round dish with a splitter and 3 SD DVRs (2 channels each using 2 cables going to each). 2 Wires coming in from the dish itself.
My goal is to migrate to 2 new HR24 HD DVRs (dual tuner capable for each) and possibly keep 1 of my old SD DVRs with 2 channels for it. (The latter may be optional).
I can lose the SD DVR if the RF functionality on the HR24 remotes is good. I can put one in the basement and run cabling out from it to an upstairs office TV (obviously that TV sees what the DVR is watching in the basement). The TV in the office is SD so coax in is fine while the DVR would be hooked up to HD at the source. My 1st question is will the RF work well enough between floors to control it while in the office (2000 sq ft house, basement right side for dvr and 1st floor opposite left side for office)? If so, we can remove the old SD DVR from the equation. If not, it needs to stay.
My 2nd question involves the new dish. SL3 or SL5? I live outside the Akron, OH area (44333). I *think* SL3 would be fine but if someone could verify and let me know if there is anything I'd lose by going with it over the SL5 I'd appreciate it.
Lastly, and the biggie since I'm not 100% sure I get the cabling aspect, what else is required? I guess this depends on question 1 (keeping the old SD DVR or not) but if someone could explain the pieces in between the dish and the equipment I'd really appreciate it.
My guess is (keeping the old SD DVR) I could use the SL3 dish with 4 cables coming out of it into the SWM-8 switch inside the house (that is powered via power supply). From here I'd also need an SWS-2 switch for the HD DVRs? (or SWS-4, not sure about this part Also, will the one cable from the SWS-2 feed both channels on a single HD-DVR?) Would anything else be necessary?
Now, in scenario 2, if I drop the SD DVR and just use two HD-DVRs (because the RF would be good enough to control the basement unit from the office) can I instead get the dish with the built in SWM switch and run a single cable into the house? Would this then need an inline power source before going to a switch of some kind that would power both channels on each HD DVR? (Is this switch the same as the SWS-2 or SWS-4 above?)
Sorry for the long explanation, just trying to understand exactly what my options are. Thanks in advance!
