So, I finally signed up for D* (so happy!) and as part of a special VIP offer, I got the Protection Plan free for a year. My CSR was very good and verbally went over the fine print and when he got to the protection plan...he said something that I has to ask him for clarification. He said that with the protection plan that if the receiver is defective after the 90 day warranty, that all you pay is shipping. I thought that was one of the benefits of the protection plan is that you DON'T pay shipping to swap out a receiver. I asked him this and he said that without the protection plan and after the 90 day warranty, that you pay the full receiver cost to get it replaced. I believe that is incorrect...any thoughts?

Sounds like you have it right...

If the unit is leased, and becomes defective after the 90 day warranty, then all you pay is shipping. If you have the protection plan, and the box becomes defective after 90 days, you shouldn't have to pay anything.

That is the way it has worked for me several times.

During the 90-day warranty period, the receiver is covered by the warranty.

After the 90-day warranty period, if you have the Protection Plan, the Protection Plan provides repair or replacement of a defective receiver. Shipping charges are paid by the Protection Plan. This coverage is a contractual obligation under the Protection Plan.

After the 90-day warranty period, if you DO NOT have the Protection Plan, then DirecTV is under no obligation to replace or repair the defective receiver. Currently they offer replacements for a $20 shipping fee and no commitment extension (or if they extend the commitment, they will remove the extension if you complain enough). But DirecTV is under no contractual obligation to provide this replacement. They do not publush the current $20 offer anywhere, and they can withdraw or change the offer at any time without notice.

I don't have Protection Plan, and my DVR just died. I only paid shipping, and my commitment date didn't change.
I'm debating adding the protection plan to my account. Is this result the norm, that is you would only pay shipping and your commitment date wouldn't change if a DVR died and you did NOT have the protection plan?

Say it isn't so!
Actually after all the horror stories with the CSR's on here....I was very happy with the call. This was just the one thing that threw up a red flag. He was very professional and well-informed (except for the PP issue). He also went over EVERYTHING (they are leased receivers, charge ETF's to the credit card you give to me, 24 month commitment, etc).
