i have a installation scheduled for jan 27th but my only problem is i live in a condo and i cant install outside of my condo so im planning on having it installed on my terris it faces northwest tho so if they tilt the dish the other way will this work also its screened in if that makes ne difference

also i got the total choice package i live in fl will i get the local fox sports feed for the marlins or do i have to purchase the sports pack for this i currently get fsfl on my local cable but am wondering if i get it with direct tv

also is nfl network in hd available and do my local channels come in hd with the dish?

and my last question is since i bought the hd package does this mean i need 2 recievcers in my room or does the hd reciever do regular channels and hd channels?

thanks in advance to all who help

If you do not have a view to the south to southwest, you won't be able to get anything. So please call and cancel your order. Otherwise, you will have your installer waste his gas money just to tell you that you can't get Dtv.

Dishnet also needs about the same view, so it looks like you are probably stuck with cable for now.

Probably the most important issue is what the previous poster said, you better have exposure to the southern sky or you will be out of luck.

You will get your local rsn based on zip code:

http://directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIF.jsp?assetId=P3000004

You will get your locals in HD (probably only the big four at most, although some areas get more), again based on zip code:

http://directv.com/DTVAPP/packProg/localChannels.jsp?assetId=900018

The NFL Network currently does not appear on Direct as a full time HD channel. The Thurs/Sat games have been broadcast in HD as well as a few other of their shows.

The HD receiver would be used for both SD and HD broadcasts.

No. It only comes with component cables. Any additional cables are on your own buck.

They will not provide, however, an HDMI splitter.

xxryspy45,

Welcome to DBSTalk! :welcome_s

I second the fact that unless you have exposure to the southern sky, as mentioned, you are out of luck for satellite service from either provider. Gosh I hate to think that's not one of the first things that the CSR would go over with a potential new customer - that's one of the primary deal-breakers right there.

Call them back and explain that you have a northwest exposure. The only way I can think of that that might work is if you are on the northwestern-most corner and the dish could be mounted "looking back over your shoulder" to the south/southwest sky. (But I also just got up and may not be thinking quite straight yet :)).

If they will do a sight survey (which I'm not sure if they are prone to do) that would be a good idea prior to any scheduled install. No sense setting aside time and waiting for the installer only to have him take one look and say, "Sorry, won't work" and get back in his truck for the next appointment.

If there are alot of condos in your neigborhood, look around and see if anyone has a D* or Dish dish on there building. Your installer may have a solution to your problem and be familiar with what you can get away with, like putting it on the roof, etc. Worth a try I would think. Good luck.

As everybody has mentioned, your view has everything to do with it. I'm not sure what type of condo you live in, but if you have NW exposure on your terrace, does that mean you have SE exposure in the front. Is there somewhere that you can put it and hide it in the front. The other way (we did this) is to mount it at the top of the back, get a small extension pipe, and have the dish just above the roof line so that you are able to see back over the roof. Find out if you can mount this in a way so that the dish can see the southern sky. If you can, then find out the size of the pipe that goes into the top of your mount. Then get the right size that will give allow you to extend this pipe. You'll have to drill holes and put carriage bolts through the extension pipe so that it won't move and cause your dish to move in the wind.
I hope this helps and I hope you'll be able to get away from the cable. Best of luck.

when i told the customer service rep my situation she said its fine and that lots of ppl have my problem so i guess they can put it backwards and have it face towards my condo and hopefully the signal carries through

Stand as close as you can to where the dish will be mounted. Look up at about a 45 degree angle to the south/southwest. If it is badly blocked, call and cancel because you won't be able to get it. The Dtv csr's will tell you just about anything you want to hear. It's not their time or gas that they have to pay $2+ a gallon for. Then you have to look at the fact that when the tech does a NLOS, more than likely, 1 or two more techs will also have to waste their time and gas to come out to verify the NLOS.

The signal for satellite cannot "carry though" like it seems some TV signals can. If there is anything between the dish and the satellite, it will block the signal.

I like TigersFanJJ's suggestion.

Welcome to the forums! :welcome_s

With a long enough pipe and good anchor you can mount a dish anywhere...But it would have to stick up over the roof...

Do you have any windows to the southwest? There are a few enterprising and hand crafted mounts that can "mount" to a window frame without violating some/most condo rules about no permanent alterations...

And/or you might find someone in the condo association who actually is a friendly person and give you a permit. (Ok, so that doesn't happen often, but it never hurts (too much) to ask.)

Good luck,
Tom

I just read the FCC factsheet, sounds like you're best bet is to move. (Sorry, I understand that isn't very helpful.)

One glimmer--you say the patio is roofed. Is there anything above your patio (like a patio from the floor above?) Is the patio roof considered common or exclusive (ie are all the patios roofed, or just some?) And/or are they all screened?

I have seen a couple of crazy mounts, hand made of course, that extend a pipe up the side of a building above one's patio without "permanently" attaching or defacing the common building elements. Yes, it pushes the association and the FCC rules TO THE MAX, but usually the association is breaking the rules themselves.

And I have read of one poster who actually was able to get a signal by placing his dish inside a window pointing the right way! Haven't seen it, can't attest to it, doubt one could get more than 1 or 2 sats, that way, but maybe...

Good luck,
Tom

im not sure if ill be able to get it or not but ill at least let em come out and try. it doesnt cost ne money to try.
No, it won't cost YOU any money for them to come out.

A lot of techs get paid only for the jobs that they complete. If they can't do the job (and from everything you've posted here, they can't) then it will cost them both the gas and the money they would have made had they not been wasting their time at your place.

But hey, it doesn't cost you anything, so go ahead and do it. :flaiming
