On my DirecTivos I have some of my season passes set as the following:
- Keep Until I Delete
- Keep at most 3 episodes

This results in 3 episodes of the show being recorded and then the unit will NOT record another episode UNTIL I delete one. This is very useful for kid shows where I just want to have some episodes on hand for the kids to watch but not constantly be recording new ones.

My question is does this work on the HR20. I have set up some series links with the same options but it just seems that it will keep on recording new episodes and delete the old ones.

Anyone see this behavior?

I belive that's intended behavior. On the HR-20, "Keep x episodes" means that the x most recent episodes will be in your myVOD list. It will delete the x+1'th episode when it records a new one.

i agree with you 110%... i think the KUID logic of the HR20 is absolutely friggin retarded. i've griped about this since day one of the HR20 release as well as the HR15 release.

However...

If you go into MyVod... and set it to KEEP UNTIL I DELETE... it will do as you want... and then some..

I use it with my son's recordings.

I have his "favorites" KUID (via MyVod).... and they are there in the folder..
while the Series Link continues to record the "latest" 5, and I save any new ones that he likes.

The setting from the Series Link, should more appropirate say:

Don't Delete if the system is running low on hard drive space, but continue to record the latest airings of the show.

Where the KUID via MyVod, works just like as it sounds.

This is basically how it works (as of the current software release)

Series Link Settings
Keep 5 Episodes
Keep Until I Delete

It will record 5 Episodes... it will not delete any of them, if the hard drive space is running low. When episode 6 is set to record, the oldest episode will be removed.

So in other words:
Keep the most recent 5 episodes, and don't delete them if the hard drive is running low.

If you set the KIUD via MyVod (or other methods, bedsides Series Link)

The recording is independent of any Series Link settings.
So the Series Link will continue to opporate in it's fashion, and ignore the recording set to KIUD via MyVod (or other methods)

I have experienced the exact same behavior and was wondering if there was a way to prevent that too.

I have seen it most often on Sportscenter and Nothing but Trailers. Two shows that are on multiple times a day. What irks me the most is that if I was watching one show and pause it to go do something else I usually return to find the episode I was watching gone and a brand new one replaced.

Thanks for the posts. I am now thoroughly confused. :)

Are you saying that setting KUID on a series link has a different meaning than if I set something to KUID after a show is recorded?

I know I'm being simple-minded but shouldn't KUID mean KUID?? I guess I just don't understand why hard drive space should come into this equation at all?

Yeah, my biggest gripe with this is that if I have a series link for a show that is on a lot (example: many kids shows are on ALL the time) the box will just keep on recording episodes. Kind of a pain.

Ok, now I'm confused again. If I'm understanding you right Earl. If when setting up a series link, I use the Keep Until I Delete function.....it will in fact delete the 'oldest' one I have stored when it gets to episode 6.

If I really, honestly, truly don't want something to be deleted ever I have to do it manually in MyVod?

I'm with you, this makes NO sense to me at all. lol

KUID basically works as a "reserve drive space for X episodes this show", meaning the episodes can't be removed to record other shows.

Sorry for confusing you... but in a simple word.
Yes... they are different.. not sure why, or if that was intended to be that way.

But that is the way both the R15 and the HR20 work with regards to KUID.

There are THREE reasons why a recording is deleted (bugs aside)
1) User requested the episode to be deleted
2) The stated limit of the number of records has been reached
3) The hard drive is running out of space, and needs to make room for new recordings.

KUID in both cases acount for #3
For what ever reason, they work differently for the #2 case... depending on where you set the KUID setting.

ok, I think I got it now. Gotta say though - I simply don't agree with the decisions made on how this works.

Maybe it's just because I had a tivo for so many years but this seems really, really counter-intuitive.

Thanks for your patience in describing this for us. It sounds like this has been the same for a long time if it is the implementation on the R15 as well. I'd love if they changed it, but it doesn't sound like that will happen any time soon.

So my new approach will be to:
- Never set a series link to KUID (just avoid the confusion)
- Manually set episodes to KUID on MYVOD when necessary

So I can't leave this without one more question: How the heck are you supposed to know if something will be deleted if they BOTH have the "K" icon? Is there a different "K" icon for series link KUIDs versus MYVod KUIDs?

It could be that. Or it could just be that, like me, you have an understanding of the English language and expect that "keep until I delete" means that the box shouldn't delete it until the user says so.
