kingwin eSATA extremely hot

Hey all,

I just installed my external hard drive onto my hr21-100. Everything seems fine so far. I'm concerned my enclosure. I went with the Kingwin Elite enclosure and a Maxtor 1TB drive.

Seems to work fine , but the enclosure seems extremely hot to the touch. I haven't measured the ambient temperature on it, but I can only keep my hand on it for about 2 - 3 seconds before I have to pull it away. Does that seem right?

Perhaps I should look into an enclosure with a fan? There is plenty of ventilation around the unit.

Any help or opinions would be appreciated..

Thanks
John

I would look into an enclosure with a fan.

Most enclosures are not meant for the drives to be run 24/7, and DVRs run the drives constantly.

I use a Targus Chill Pad (Best Buy, buy.com, etc.). It's the size of a very flat, thin laptop, runs off of a USB port (for power), has 2 fans to exhaust air, and blows the air out of a front slot. I lay it upside down on, for example, an H20 in a cabinet, and so long as the exhaust air has somewhere to go, the unit (H20, etc.) is cool to the touch. The fans are super quiet and run all the time.
