Switzerland, May 23 - The chairman of Swiss firm Kudelski SA, which makes software for pay television, said on Thursday he expects regulators will eventually let a deal go through between U.S.-based satellite TV groups EchoStar Communications Corp. and DirectTV, but it will likely take until the final quarter of 2002.
Regulatory approval is needed for Kudelski's U.S. ally, EchoStar, to acquire its larger satellite television rival, DirecTV, and its parent Hughes Electronics.
Andre Kudelski, chairman of the Swiss group, speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of a business conference, said he had just been in contact with the United States on Wednesday and said of the outlook for a deal, "It looks quite good."
"But it will not come very quickly. I'm expecting now that it will happen in the fourth quarter," he said.
EchoStar is one of Kudelski's biggest clients.
