I just got my HR20 and in some of the recordings on MPEG4 stations, there was a breakup in the recorded video for a few seconds (picture stopped, parts of the picture broken, then it restarted playing okay). I suspect this might be an error in the codec decoding. Some of the other posts indicate that this may be so. Since I live in the LA area, I think CBSW, NBCW, ABCW and FOXW channels (81-89) are the same as the LA local HD channels (2-11), so I can record either set. My understanding is that the LA local HD channels are compressed using MPEG4 while the West HD channels are MPEG2.

Does anyone know if recording the MPEG2 channels is more stable than the MPEG4 channels? Before having to change all my Season Pass oops, Series Link selections from the MPEG4 channels to the MPEG2 channels, I would like to know it will help.

Been having real good luck with recording off our MPEG4 locals. Have over 30 "series links" (all MPEG4) a lot of "two-at-a-time" recordings and they all record fine. A couple of times I've had "trick play" problems if I try to bounce between "two" programs recording at the same time. Also had a "lip sync" issue for the first time on KCBS (The Unit) last night.
Oh by the way, if you haven't heard KTLA (CW) went "HD" in the last 24hrs.

What channel number is that? I cant find it.[/QUOTE]

If you have made a "favorite" list (I'm sure you have) Select "5 KTLA" from list instead of "LA5":)

First, kudos for the KTLA activation heads-up.

Update - yesterday we had Santa Ana winds and I lost my local HD channels. Checked signal strength and 103 was 20-40. The other sats were 70-80. Unfortunately I don't know what they were before the winds. May be that 103 was always marginal which was cause of dropouts in original post. Tech will be out Saturday to readjust. I put out question on installation HR20 installation Forum asking what signal strengths are typical, so I'll know what to require when tech is here.

the mpeg 2 have been significanyly more stable for me - I don't even bother with the 2-11 channels right now.
Yup, same here. Although to be honest, I haven't even tried 2-11 channels for weeks now. Maybe stability has improved, but I'll probably stick with the mpeg2 channels until they go away completely.

BTW, thanks also to tjboyd for the heads up on KTLA going HD. I wouldn't have known about that if it wasn't for this forum. Gotta love this place. :;)

We have had to stop recording on the MPEG 4 channels....we have gone to the non high def channels but have not tried the 80 channels.

We constantly lose audio on the MPEG 4 channels.

We also have a high High Def reciever (can't remember what the model is) but its the TIVO type one without the MPEG 4 and we never have audio drop outs.
