I've read on this site that you do not need a land line phone unless you want pay per view. However, someone told me that you need to have a land line phone when the installer comes to set up service. Something about the installer needs a land line to receive the initial downloads when setting you up? Is there any truth to needing a land line phone for any reason (other than PPV)? Thanks.

Got mine installed / Activated just fine without a land line.

D* would LIKE you to have it (...at one time it was required).

But, now you don't. You'll need to use either D*.com or call to order PPV, etc.

Land Line is not required.
For a while techs were getting charged (by DirecTV) if the receiver was not connected to a phone line.
DirecTV loves phone lines. It helps them track you so they know you're not using the receiver in multiple locations.
There is a clause in your DirecTV commitment that says they can charge you lots of money if you dont have your receiver connected. But, they dont.

The phone line gives you access to PPV, Caller ID, and there are 2 other features I dont recall.
PPV can also be ordered over the phone, via the automated system/csr, OR, via directv.com

It's also supposed to work over a network connection instead of phone line too (PPV purchases that is) but I personally have't seen proof yet.
If your system is connected to the internet (not just the network, but the internet) order a PPV.

IF it fails tell us what happens and we'll troubleshoot it.
The PPV flag is prolly disabled on DirecTVs side.

I ordered, and watched, Die Hard 4 quite some time ago.
I don't recall ever seeing it appear on my bill.

With the new PPV rules (watch in 24 hours) I don't anticipate ordering another PPV again.

Why don't you see if it is storing the charge on the box and plug it in to the telephone line? We could all learn from that experiment.

Can I assume that if I go to purchases and see it listed there that it's still on the card? It is listed there. I have no land line to connect so there is really no experimenting we can do there. I do have the network connected, internet connected and can even download VOD. If someone would care to help me experiment on getting this off my card via the network I would be happy to try.

I started a thread to ask about this problem and get it fixed. I never did. I have a HR20 that was originally connected to the phone line and now to the network. No one at directv can fix it (at least 3 phone calls) and they all act like I'm crazy because PPV can't be ordered over the network. I did however get a new HR21 and connected it straight to the network and ALL PPV & DOD functions work. Care to help me fix my HR20?

Did you get charged for the PPV (on the HR21)?

I think that's the reason for the question to Sirshagg, as the box will let you make a few purchases without calling back to the mothership, but at some point (dollar-wise I should think), you can't order more until the current charges are transmitted.

I'm not really all that into PPV, as our library has a great DVD selection... But it's one of those things I wonder about... My old box had the phone line, and when the new one went in I asked the installer if he needs the phone line (from the old box) and he said no. I thought that curious... At the time, the HR21 was not connected to the Internet either (it is now, and has phone).

At least here they still do $5 - $7.50 per IRD. Even if the cust doesn't even has landlines. :nono2:
Try explaining to the new DTV customer that if they would just drop their DTV service they would have money for a land line phone. Then the could order PPV on the disconnected DTV receiver.

I guess it's true with more people relying only on their cellular phone and with dry-loop DSL available, more and more people do not have POTS. Even monitored alarm system do not require POTS. A friend had a new alarm installed that uses RF technology (maybe cellular, though I would not like that) to make the call to the monitoring office.

The last number I saw was one in six households have no land line and no plan to get one.

SO... I have had directv for years, and used vonage for a few years for my home phone line (PITA to set up!). The vonage router died on me a couple months ago, and I am getting 2 new HR2X receivers on Aug. 2 (hopefully HR-21's). My old DVR's (1 HDVR2 and 1 HR10-250) are going to be set up in different rooms where I know I will not need to order PPV or anything, so I don't plan on getting a new phone line installed. I thought that the HR2X receivers would work over the ethernet only, this post makes me think I might be wrong about that. I really wouldnt care so much about the PPV's, but what really concerns me is my NFL Direct ticket package. Does anyone know if I can still get this over the internet only? I have a router in both rooms where the HR2X receivers will be hooked up. Any help would be appreciated!

I have always wondered this. During training the D* rep told us that the phoneline is to keep the receiver connected with the D* network. So then I asked, well isn't the receiver connected to the "network" through the sats? He looked at me and changed the subject.

However they work fine without the phoneline.

Well, this seems helpful.... I know the receivers will work without the phone line, but not for ordering PPV and stuff. What I really want to know is will NFL Direct Ticket work with the ethernet only???

Mine worked last year connected to neither ethernet nor phone
