Leased HR21-100 changed to owned

How does a leased receiver change to an owned receiver?

When I added my HR34-700 in December, I deactivated an HR21-100 and asked for a recovery kit to be sent. When I called for a service call two weeks ago due to a 771B error, I informed DTV that I had not yet received a recovery kit for the HR21-100 and the CSR said that they would send it. I received the recovery kit last week and decided to box it up tonight. While checking the RID number, I noticed that the recovery kit was for the HR21-100 that I was keeping. I called DTV and the CSR cancelled the recovery kit and informed me that the deactivated receiver is listed as owned thus there is no need to return it. Of course, my account has always listed the receiver as leased.

I have swapped out older receivers than this one and DTV has always wanted them back. Does anyone know the criteria for changing a leased receiver to an owned receiver?

Interesting. Maybe they don't want hr20 and hr21s back anymore and just mark them as owned when someone wants to return them. Yeah, I totally pulled that out of my ass.
They still want HR20-100's as I sent one back in August 2011 and it was an old one- my original HDDVR.
I can see not wanting H20s back, but definitely do want HR20s since it has built in OTA. I don't see a reason for them not wanting an HR21 either.
Showing on your account as leased only means your paying $6 fee (no matter owned or leased) for any active receiver over your First one.

That was over 6 months ago now..things may have changed.
First, check your old bills (previous it the latest price increase.) It will tell you whether the receiver was considered owned or leased previous to deactivation. This information is not available online or with the new bills.

If those show leased, you will want to verify with the access card department that the receiver is marked as owned. Ask them if you can resell the DVR, and someone else will be able to reactivate it in their account. (You may not want to sell it, but if they say you can't, I would be skeptical that it is really marked as owned. You don't want them coming back and asking you for it at some point in the future.)

If you do end up getting a box and returning it, be sure to get a receipt when you drop it off. That will prove you returned it, even if they lose it in transit or on the back end.
I deactivated a HR20-700 about a year ago and the CSR said it was listed as owned and I didn't need to return it (this had been my primary receiver so the bill didn't show anything). It seems to be a random phenomenon.

This happened to me on an HR21-700 which died. D* said I owned it and do not return. I got charged $256.00 for not returning the receiver. I called D* and the CSR said that I needed to return owned or not. D* sent a recovery kit, and I returned it. On my next D* bill, I got over $500 in credit. Return or not to return, that is the question? I would like to know the real policy on owned receivers. It would be great if one of the D* employees and DBSTALK members would let us know. Have a great day!

I deactivated an HR20-700 today (it was leased and was the first non-TiVo DIRECTV DVR I added to my account back in February 2007) and .... DIRECTV confirmed it was a lease and said it had to be returned.

So indeed it seems to be hit or miss whether you keep it or return it.

Yes where are these employees of Directv who post here? Now those employees are giving away free equipment...shame shame.
If an owned receiver is replaced due to a technical replacement it must be returned. If it's replaced via an upgrade it doesn't need to be.

If you have any questions about the status of a receiver contact the access card department as they have the final say.

When did you get the original HR21-100?

I didn't realize this but I guess it makes sense. For example someone with an owned HR20 that has a bad hard drive could call in under the protection plan and get it replaced for free. If DirecTV didn't make them return the HR20 they could then just replace the hard drive themselves and have 2 working owned HD-DVRs.

Your situation is different. You had a replacement. I am guessing one of two things happened. Either you had someone else install it and they didnt take it because it was owned or the rep was just wrong on the phone. I have dealt with both. If its replaced, even if its owned, its a 1 for 1 swap so D* should get the other one back.

Yeah except for they wont let you reactivate it on your account so you would need to sell it or give it away.

Mike,

I'm not sure of the exact date but I believe it was in the summer or fall of 2008. The build date was 5/2008. It was the 2nd HDDVR ( not counting the HR10-250).

That's about as close as I can get.

What you said sounds correct. D* replaced the HR21 with a broken HR22 which was replaced by a D* Contractor installed HR24. I did get a $500 credit, so no complaints here!

Thanks for simplifying the owned return policy.
Thought I'd update on the latest DTV sage of return boxes.

Received another return kit on Tuesday. While opening the box, I was joking with the wife that we soon would have more return boxes than receivers of which she was not to impressed.. After getting it open, it was for an HR22-100. Having (1) HR22-100 ( in my son's room which I frequently threaten to deactivate), I was somewhat amused. I checked the RiD numbers and found that they didn't match.

Assuming that they had made some type of mistake and sent the kit to the wrong account, I called and to report it. For the next 2 hours, I was then on the phone trying to get my account straightened out. The return kit, supposedly, was sent at my request when I had a receiver changed on on 3/11/12. Unfortunately, I did not have a box changed out nor was I in the country at the time. I even reportedly had a new receiver installed on that day and my account was noted to send a recovery box because I would not allow the tech to take the old box.

Being a long time customer, my CSR felt me completely trustworthy and attempted to remove the boxes that I don't have from my account. After several attempts, she realized it was beyond her capabilities and forwarded me to the access card dept to try and fix it. It took him a while to get things cleared up but we both got a chuckle knowing some other CSR would be getting a call about lack of service in a few minutes from some disgruntled customer whose service was just cut off.

Checked my account today and all credits and receivers are correct.
