I have a leased HR22-700(I think) that I tried to switch to an H2x receiver with D* but they wouldn't do it. I had just gotten them to replace my 2nd receiver, an HR21-700, with a new HR34. I am set up for WMV(?). They said that it cost them too much money for the swap, $275 I was quoted, so they wouldn't do it. I asked them about buying an H2x on eBay and they said go ahead but if it's a "leased" model they wouldn't authorize it. They said it had to be "owned" and the authorization fee would be $20.

Can anyone explain what's going on? What are my options?

Purchasing an owned (used) Hx2x will result in a $20 charge for a new access card. This can be risky because most used receivers are not owned so you need to go through certain steps to make sure they are owned - with no outstanding balance. Those step can be found at the site here with a quick search but you will need to talk to someone in the access card dept. and give them the Receiver ID (RID).

Your other option is to get a new receiver from a 3rd party retailer like solidsignal.com. You will still be leasing the unit and agreeing to a new 24mo. contract but it will be new.

so you have an hd/dvr that you want to swap for hd? why??? but a new hd lease is $99 plus shipping of $19.95 shouldnt need an install. are you trying to get whole home installed? you should have all the equip for it if you have a 34.

as for 2nd hand equip, before you buy call dtv with reciever id # to check that its owned first. The $20 is to buy a new access card.

more details would help.

I'm trying to be able to schedule recordings from either of the two viewing locations. According to D* and others on this forum this function can only be performed from a non-DVR receiver. The HR34 has enough tuners and storage to satisfy my needs from these two locations and as far as I know I only give up the pause function while watching "live" at the non-DVR location. This may be more important than the remote scheduling function but it doesn't seem like it would be. I know the remote recording scheduling requirement happens a lot.

If you have a tablet such as iPad the Direct TV app allows you to use it for this purpose. Quite nicely I might add.

Don "right now it's one of that apps best features" Bolton

I guess I look at it differently. You are correct in that you can't send a recording to a different dvr from a dvr, but It can record locally and with whole home it doesn't matter became it can be watched anywhere. However without too much detail I can appreciate wanting all recordings on the 34. But there are other solutions. For example smart phone dvr scheduler app let's you choose which dvr. Ipad app, or directv.com. maybe these are perfect fixes, but they are much cheaper.

Food for thought.
